It is a good thing that silkie hens are such good broody natural incubators, because other than being cute, they aren't good for much else. Even if they were big enough to eat, with that black skin and gray meat no one wants them when they get too old to lay eggs. Of course, extra silkie roos are really hard to rehome.

PnB in all honestly I am planning on getting one by monday. My insurance will cover it at no cost to me. 270K is alot fo money but it wont last forever. my wife has like 25k in life insurance. We each have it set up to where we are each others beneficiarys. Should something happen to the both of us it is equaly divided between our daughter and my stepdaughter. They each get 50% at the age of 21. With there aunt Lisa acting as a trustee i guess you would say. She is one of the sweetest most honest christian women I know and would do what is best for each of the girls. We figure by 21 they should be mature enough to wisely use the money (i sure hope so). One is 8 and one is 16. Back to happier topics

Does anyone know what the most efficent meat rabbit is? We once had some huge white rabbits given to us that tasted so good with fried taters, gravy, and biscuits but i have no clue what they where. I cant seem to get out and kill any cottontails so i guess pen raised will have to do.

The commecial breeds of rabbit are the New Zeland White and the California White.
Does anyone on this list know anyone with Standard Old English or Fighting Games, I am looking for a pair or trio of the Crele color pattern in these, or some of the cockers call them Doms or Dom bloodlines, Also am Looking for any of the Standard Games in Blue of any color pattern. Lynn

A big white rabbit would probably have been a New Zealand. If you can get some breeding stock that has been bred for meat rather than show, you should be able to raise either NZ or California rabbits to 4-5 lbs in 8-10 weeks. I have been crossing my Flemish Giant buck with my NZ does and having good luck getting the kits to 4-5 lbs in 8 weeks.

I also have some Champagne de'Argent rabbits that should be a good meat rabbit, if I can ever get the weather to refrain from going below freezing on the day they are due to kindle.

I must confess that the only person I could get to try one was my 86 year old neighbor. She was not impressed and my Great Pryr got most of the chicken.

ETA: After reading the NY Times article, I think I know what the problem was. My neighbor probably left out the ginseng, wolfberries and red dates and she tried to fry the silkie instead of making it into soup.

The Chinese will trample over each other to get Silkie meat to eat, they love it, you know how they are about their delicacies, the grosser the better, LOL LOL. I know an auction Rat that buy's them and sells them to the chinamen for like $ 30.00 ea, and he cannot keep them supplied.

After reading Carla's article about fancy Asian dishes I can better understand the attraction of the silkie for eating. It still seems like a lot of trouble to cook them in the traditional Chinese way, for so little amount of meat. It is interesting that even in the restaurants that sell them, the waiters are careful to emphasize the health benefits of the lean meat instead of emphasizing the charcoal grey color of the meat. All that said, does anyone know of a market outlet for silkie roosters? I would enjoy raising them more, if I knew where to sell the roosters.

You are in OKC so you have a neverending supply of Chinese resturants that would buy them, and no they don't have a problem with skirting the rules where food is concerned, just listen to the food news coming out of china. I think it is a gold mine to honest with you. I have thought of it myself. You know what they say!! silkies are cuter than a chinese baby LOL.
