First you should get a copy of the "Standard of Perfection". There are two of these, one is put out by the American Poultry Association and the other by the American Bantam Association. Or.... you could go to a local poultry show or two and pay close attention to how the birds of the breeds you are interested in have placed, then compare the winners to your own birds.
Then, decide on a show you would like to show at and give the show contact (usually the secretary) your address, and they will mail you a show catalog. This will have more information on the show and an entry forum.
Really all you have to do after you've chosen a show and entered your birds is get them cleaned up, and be at the show by starting time!
A GREAT way to get involved with a program that give you a lot of advise and projects about poultry (mainly showing poultry) is to join the APA/ABA Youth Program club. Our state leader is actually a BYC member too... Dandelion007... I think you met her at P.O.O.P.S.
I think the next show for most will probably be the local fairs. I'd recommend just jumping in on that one. Wash your birds and go. Many are very willing to share their knowledge there. That goes for any show too.
Another good place to start is 4-H if your county has a poultry program. (Grace teaches ours.
She does an excellent job but not all counties are as lucky as ours.)
Come to one show and I'm sure you will meet several of the families here on BYC that routinely go to shows. All it takes is one show and your kids will look forward to seeing their friends over and over.
Many of us put out contact info on the upcoming shows around Oklahoma and Arkansas here on the thread. Usually the show catalogs are ready around a month or so out from the show date.
PM me if you would like more information. I'm always glad to be an enabler!
