I don't know how well wood ash works. We use a whole house wood furnace and all the ash goes in the same area. It's THE dustbath/hangout spot. We still had a lice and mite problem this summer. We used a combination of Poultry Protector, DE and poultry dust to get it taken care of.

I get my feed ordered in to a smaller locally owned feedstore. They order in the DE and lots of other things if you just ask and then you don't have to pay the high shipping cost. The DE they actually keep a bag or two in usually now, but they don't put it out, you have to ask for it. You might try calling a few places to check before you order online.

TY for the simple maintenance plan Al. Now that things are taken care of, we've been looking into maintenance approaches.

Sorry to hear about the pup, hope she recovers. We go to a vet in another town that deals with a lot of livestock so we don't have to put up with the snobbery/condescension/whatever it is. Costs half as much too.

sounds like someone had a "pet" that started disturbing the neighbors.

Wonder what the "adoption fee" is on something like that. . . .

Edited to add: I had to go look it up on the web page. They have one un-altered male chicken that is brown and white. The chicken is 1 year and 1 month old. The adoption fee is 1/2 the current market price - whatever that might mean.
