Yes, I've been gluten free for years, had to not by choice. Can't imagine anyone CHOOSING gluten free. It is a very hard thing to do, gluten is in so many things you never think about, even some spices, potatoe chips, almost everything processed. It is very expensive to bake gluten free, you need multiple flours for anything you make each flour costs $4-$8 per 1lb bag, plus xantham and guar gum. When I first started I just did not eat anything made of flour (pasta, bread, pastry) and I would have sold my first born (if I had one) for a yeast roll!!!!!!!!! Since then I have experimented w/ making/buying gluten free. I buy the pasta, but not the spagehtti, just can't find one worth eating.

Bottom line is if you need to for health reasons, you won't believe the change, how amazing it is to be mostly pain free, and not dread eating. If you are thinking it is "healthier" their are much easier and less costly ways of eating healthy.

Well, I have seen the prices and they are incredibly steep. However, I have numerous allergies. One in particular is a serious allergy to MSG. So because of that I have to be incredibly careful. My doctor is considering doing all the testing for gluten sensitivity due to some problems that I have with my stomach and digestive tract. I have trouble eating a meal without some type of problem. Also, my doctor seems to think that there is a possibility that if I am sensitive that it is causing some fertility issues. So I will know more on Dec 1st when I go to the doc again. It would not surprise me that they find I am sensitive as I do know that I am allergic to grain dust in a very bad way.

As of right now I cant eat out much as I get sick within 30 mins or less and most things that are processed foods out of a box I can pretty much forget eating all together. Summer is better for me as there is an abundance of fresh food around the farm that doesn't make me sick. Winters are more difficult as that is not as readily available. That is why I started canning this year and bought an extra freezer. It is nice to know there is someone else out there dealing with this too!

If you have a runt large fowl it could potentially be used in a bantam project. Or maybe you have a throwback giant come out of your bantams that could be used to freshen a large fowl line.

I try & keep tabs on weak ones too, to see if its something that regularly occurs in a particular line. That helps me breed away from it.
 
Genetic diversity is certainly at play here; everyone's body is a bit different. Some seem to utilize food better than others, and those that are smaller or less assertive may get less to eat simply because they are crowded out some at feeding time. It also could be because the smaller one is a pullet, and the smallest one is that way because of its illness. The energy that would normally have gone into growing had to be used to survive. If it is small only because of the illness, it should recover and eventually reach the same size as the others. That happened with one of my guineas. She swallowed a long cord that protruded from her beak. I slowly and carefully pulled it out, but she was somewhat ill for awhile and stayed small quite a long time but caught up completely. If you think about it, the sizes could vary for several other reasons

Ivyblaze, you can find out w/o the costly tests, just go gluten free for a few weeks, you will notice an almost immediate relief if that is your problem. When I first thought I had a problem I didn't have health insurance and couldn't afford all the tests, so I don't have an official diagnosis, which is actually better b/c no insurance company can deny me or reduce my coverage for it. Except that if you actually have celiac's I think there are some meds for that, but even that you wouldn't ness. need the meds if diet alone fixed your symptoms. I suspect my problem is allergy, and not celiac's especially since like you I have many food and drug allergies, several life threatening.

Gluten free is hard, but soooooooooooooo worth it in how you feel, both your GI, and all around health!!!! It also gets easier w/ time, and since it is becoming the newest "hollywood disease d'jour" there are a lot more mainstream options now then there used to be.
 
Those are two very good reasons my doc has not noted it and also I don't have insurance and it is costly...She is suggesting like you to just do the diet and a food journal and see. I have been actively doing both for a couple of weeks now...the holidays are going to be difficult but like she said it is the perfect time of the year to test this theory. So on the 1st I am taking in my diet journal...we shall see. I am noticing though that the days that I eat something I shouldn't I am sick for a couple of days even afterwards. At this point I am tired of feeling bad, tired all the time, etc. Also my dentist is having the same thoughts as my doc...I am having to have quite a bit of dental work done because of all this. I like some of the pastas that are g free but not all, and I am having difficulty with the breads. My BF though likes the pamela's pancakes from the mix...he didn't know they were g free til after he ate like 6 of them and kept saying, "these banana pancakes are AWESOME! LOL

Kassaundra- can eating gluten free clear up chronic stomach problems? i have acid reflux really bad, which means daily medications- would rather deal with it without meds

One thing I really like so far in these Mottles; they have alot of LONG foot feathers. I got them to improve type in my Mille fleur cochins. My milles don't have too bad foot feathers but I would like their body types to be more round and wide.
To start my Lavender cochin project I am starting with chickes from three different states. I already see differences in the types at 19 days. I had only one hatch from 6 eggs from NY but it looks to be a cockerel. It has nice feathers so far. As I understand it, poor feather quality is a problem in the self blue gene.
