morning carah!! yep - if it aint broke don't fix it?? LOL! so far we haven't had an issue- i am limiting free range time to a couple hours in the afternoon, as we have seen alot of hawks checkin out the cafe... oddly, that little cochin bantam is much more likely to give warning- barny seems to still be growing into his responsabilities- although they do give warning about those dangerous com trails in the sky!

You will have to be more careful with winter coming on, they will hunt the easy meal if it is there. I don't have much problems with those because of all the tree's but they do try every once in a while. Right now I have to worry more about the neighbors pig than anything else!! Silly thing keeps getting out up there & coming here to eat my chicken feed & tear up my pen so I have kept mine up for a few days.

Got most of my water's out yesterday & only have to make a few more so that is what I will do tonight.

so the run is 16 x 20, the coop is 10 x 10, will that be enough room if i need to keep them in?? 18 large fowl

Congrats on the babies Donnie! I hope my December hatch does that well. I candled them a couple of days ago, which was day 12 and most of them looked good. Mine are a bunch of "whoknowswhats" so I will be surprised.

I left my chickens in their coops today. I had two disappear yesterday between 3 and 5:30pm and so I am totally paranoid. I am hoping they roosted somewhere else, like under the shed or in a tree and will turn up. It is one of my buff orps and a buff wyandotte.

I haven't seen any dogs running the neighborhood in a long time. Our neighbors have boxers in their fence, so if they got in there they were fair game. I don't think our cats could eat a whole chicken and leave no evidence. We have pigs, that are about 70 lbs now. The chickens go in their pasture, but I've never seen the pigs do anything other than run at a group of chickens just to watch them scatter. In fact, if there is only one chicken, they ignore it. And the one bird that is always in there and even eats from the pigs' trough is not one of the missing, so.... I'm clueless and very paranoid right now!

Hey Sooner tell your neighbor your are going to have a pig dinner for Christmas if he don't fix his pen, and I bet he will fix it. Ha Ha

Instead of chicken wire try using Apron wire, it is a 17 gauge hex wire that is 1 1/2" holes but it is thick like chicken wire use to be 50 years ago. I use it all the time, it is 5' tall and is label to be as kennel wire also. Call around, it is out there, nothing is going to get through but maybe a snake. I use it on some of my chicken tractors and pens I sell, I also have several of my own pens made with it. It will not sag like chicken wire on the roof of your pens, just make sure you put it up tight with enough supports.

If anyone out there has any LF Ameraucana hens in solid black, blue or splash let me know.

Robin that should hold at least thirty or forty birds!lol. Crowd them in there ,the more the merryier!Just kidding but yes they have plenty of room and you could actually add a few especialy if they are getting some free range. If you got mean or pecking birds they are going to be a problem no matter how much room you have. If they all get along being a little crowed isn't going to hurt them as long as they all can get to a feeder and water.

Sooner catch that pig, maybe it will grow on you and you will be a hog rancher too!lol

Thanks wayne! Ok, i won't stress on it then- they do get along pretty well, other than occasional squabbles- funny, the LB hens, they seem to be lower in the flock heiarchy, they won't go in the new coop cause the head hen and her second in command stand by the coop door to make sure they don't come in, so i carry them in-

too bad Shawnee show happens when it does, our taxes are due the 1st of January, so we are scraping together every penny we can to pay it. tv, news all say its about 28, so much time, so little to do.

Brrrrr
I know that the freezing weather just began, but it would be fine with me if it didn't last very many weeks. I have to laugh however since it wasn't very long ago that we were complaining about the heat and how to keep the birds from stroking out by putting ice in their water and providing shade. Now, Mother Nature is providing the ice in the water and we are trying to keep ice from forming.

One nice thing about Oklahoma weather, just wait a few days/hours - it will change.

My birds need to be wormed. I treated with Wazine last week and will follow up with a second dosage in 14 days, but is there another wormer I need to use to get any worms that Wazine doesn't treat? Also, any suggestions on the best place to get a bottle of Wazine that is larger than the standard 16 oz that is carried in local stores?
