LOL, I can't do that because he is a great guy & does alot for us & in fact his mother is the one that made my cabinets at rock bottom prices & he helps install them so I will put up with his pic until it goes to butcher. He also spoils my DD to no end, all she has to say is I want & he gets it for her but I drew they line at peacocks!

Hey everyone

I think I should throw the whole idea of downsizing out the window and just hold tight here at our four little acres until the Good Lord sees to move us else where. Jason was looking through one of our Mother Earth Magazines on their "Poultry" edition one and already began pointing out what birds he is gonna want come spring

... I told him we better get the coop moved to the back pasture and expanded before thats gonna happen...

I started( ok ok one post put in) building a ric rac pallet fence for around our house to make a more distinct "back yard" for all the kids that come under our care, which will also make it easier to keep them contained and spotted through the back window...

I hear the show was a blast... I think once things settle down just a wee bit for us we may have to check out these shows, they sound very fun and educational...

Everyone,

I am days and days behind and running to catch up.....

but still wanted to say Shawnee was AWESOME, AWESOME!!! I met sooooo many people...lots of old friends and also met lots of new ones. Enjoyed lunch and talked to so many people that by the end of the day, I had no voice left! It was a great day. I was super pleased to sell so many serama....especially single roosters!!!!

I desperately needed to free up some single rooster cage space.

Betsy...I have the egg that went to lunch...I am tending it carefully...if I am successful, I will give it back to you in the spring.

Barns I love your new avatar with the puppies!!!

Sounds like Jason has it as bad as you do!!! Downsizing is only a temporary fix so you have the excuse to get more at least that is how it works for me. Then I downsize again to repeat the cycle over & over.

Sooner, Do you have a copy of the Standard of Perfection on NN's?
A lot of the stuff I talked to the guy about was stuff I had already heard but he did tell me a few things.

Sooner,
This is the info that I have posted on my page.
I got it from a few different sources, but I am looking at it and rethinking some of it after talking to Mr.
Hayworth.
One thing he told me that he almost always does is breed Homozygous to Heterozygous NN's.
He also doesn't outcross very much.
So as I rethink this maybe I will make some changes.

When you breed NN's, either 50% of the chicks will have naked necks (in both sexes) or 100% of them. It depends on whether he has one or two copies of the naked neck gene. Two would make heterozygous.

If your rooster either has a totally bare neck or has a tiny bow tie with only few feathers, you might expect to get 100% naked necked chicks.
If he has a large clump (big bow tie) with the feathers covering "a good bit" of the neck, he's probably not pure.. expect 50% naked necked chicks.

You'll know once you hatch at least 15-20 chicks.. if any chick hatches without a naked neck, it is proof he has just one copy of the naked neck gene. Even if it's just 2-5 out of 15. However if you hatch at least 20 and all have naked necks, the rooster is pure for it and a good choice to keep for future breeding if he is also good in other ways.

Also, if you plan on breeding for naked necks, do not save the non-naked necked chicks.. they don't have the NN gene in them at all. That is unless the bird has something you like and want to introduce into your naked neckbreeding program.
The naked neck gene is dominant which means if the bird has it, you see it.. if bird doesn't SHOW it, it doesn't have the gene at all.
Simple as that.

I have heard that to keep NNs close to standard, outcrosses must be made. If you keep a feather necked rooster and hen that you like the looks of out of some of the hatches the percentage of NNs will go up to about a 75/25 split.

But if you were to get a homozygous rooster and breed back to a NN hen of course it would be 100% NNs.
I have been told that once you accomplish this, the thing to do would be to line breed them.
If you try to do that, they will start to lose body type and the dead in the shell rate goes way up.
What they are trying to do is revert back to the Madagascar Game form from which they were originally bred.
