Cool! I hope to go to Cement on Saturday, but Gerald has been told there is "mandatory overtime" on Saturday. I think he just might be too sick to go to work Saturday

Goodnight to those that are headed to bed.

Carla ;

Mandatory overtime what the heck is that hehehe, Yes I think he might look a little peeked on Saturday LOL.

AL

Al, I just looked at the weather forecast for Saturday ... 40% chance of rain & high of 73. I hope it doesn't rain Saturday! I must sell some birds!

Yeah, they're making us work overtime, and here it's the busiest time of year for me with all our birds and chicks and eggs and I want to do some gardening too. We are exhausted. It sure makes me wish I could retire early.

TJ's NA NA.....I am out in Briggs. I am very much looking forward to going up to Pryor again. This will be my first chicken show in years. Even though I have always maintained that I am retired from showing both chickens and pigeons (having done so for almost 40 years) I still keep getting sucked back into it. The chicken shows I have always missed, the chickens I miss, the pigeons not so much.
Now I am just saying that I will show at local shows but no more long distance shows. My wife cannot figure out why I am so critical, if I am not going to show? She does not understand why I cannot just have chickens to have them. Well, after showing for so long it is just a habit I cannot break. Even IF I never show again, I want show stock, just because to me that is what they are supposed to look like.
I have to keep going back to my MIL birds. She bought chicks last year at COO-OP. She bought a silver laced wyandotte pullet. Every single time I go up there I just loose it laughing at that bird. Being that I am an old wyandotte man from way back, I do have a fairly good idea on what a wyandotte is suppose to look like. The thing this bird and a wyandotte have in common is the fact that yes, both are chickens. This bird is totally black with a little white lace feather on her back. It just makes me laugh.
I guess, I just cannot break the cycle. I really am not interested in showing but I want show bird quality. Yeah , I know makes perfect sense.
My wife just says I am old and cynical and should just generally stay away from others cause I don't play nice. Bah! What does she know anyway!
I finally have 2 roosters out here. They are mutts and that don't bother me. If they were full blooded something I would probably have a problem with them. I wanted to have them so I can hear them crow. It has been almost 15 years since I' ve heard crowing roosters and I miss it. So they do their job and I am happy. I would actually prefer my yard to sound like a chicken show.

Are you going to have a name tag or anything on sat. so I can spot you? I will introduce meself to you or you can probably just listen for me as I will be the one griping about something I am sure...LOL.

charter,

Welcome to the Okies thread!!!

It's great that you continue to enjoy the chickens. We need your experience and wisdom here. I hope you can go to Okie get-together in April too. We would definitely enjoy your presence.

Gerald took some pic's of our turkeys the other day, and I finally loaded them on the computer.

Notice all the toms have torn tail feathers. Hopefully now that I've separated the breeds and thinned down the tom population they will get better looking. The silly toms still like to fight with each other through the fence, even though they've been separated for about 3 weeks or more.

As a point of trivia

there are actually only two colors of eggs - white and blue. Brown eggs are white on the inside and have a brown cuticle of various shades of brown that colors the outside. Blue eggs are blue on the inside and various shades of blue/green/pink on the outside. The blue egg gene is dominant, which is why you get so many different shades of blue/green/pink when you start crossing Americauna birds.

Try cracking open a white egg, a brown egg and a green/blue egg. You will see that the inside is either white or blue. Brown eggs, no matter how deep the outer color of brown, are actually white on the inside.

Well that explains why my olive green eggs laid by my EE is aqua blue in the inside. I think it is the neatest thing ever.

That is something that I want to try is Turkeys. I have never had any experience with them but was around my brothers place alst year and they had them. They won me over, especially when they kept trying to steal my lighter, ring and anything else they could geta hold of. I really like the royal palm and the nargassett.

Yep, I like all the turkeys we have. I'll have to admit though, that my favorite turkey is the Narragansett turkey that Maribeth, aka Poultryand bees has. He is a gorgeous tom that loves attention and loves to strut around.

Hopefully I'll have turkey poults & eggs at the POOPS get-together in April. We're getting eggs from our Blue Slate, Royal Palm and Bourbon Red turkeys daily now, but the Narragansett turkeys haven't decided it's time yet.

I think everyone that enjoys poultry should have at least one turkey in their lifetime. Some of the Okies here have gotten really attached to their turkeys. We don't have a pet turkey ... yet. I've been able to convince my husband that we need to sell some of the breeds of chickens we raise to downsize, but when it comes to turkeys ... neither of us can decide which breed we like the least.

I am hopeful that we will be able to get some Bourbon reds and Royal Palms from you at Poops

I received the EE Eggs yesterday morning Thanks for the great wrapping and fast shipping
I made room in the bator last night for them...We will know in 21 days

Good morning, Okies
The sun cleared the horizon while I was catching up on posts made since I went to bed last night.

Carla,
I am sorry ya'll are having to work so many hours. That will definately have negative effects on your your and Gerald's health after awhile if you can't ever get rested.

Slightly Cracked - hope all goes well with the science fair today. I know that folks sometimes think teenagers are creatures from another planet, but there are a lot of great teenagers who are bright, funny and a pleasure to be around.

Teach -

I am really looking forward to meeting you at POOPS

Charter - you sound like a wealth of information on chickens and it is wonderful you have decided to join us. As for posting your message twice - the computer system last night was taking forever to post messages and it is a wonder that I didn't post some of mine 6 times, since I kept hitting the submit button and waiting, waiting, waiting.
