Well I met BigOkie at the flea market in Tulsa, I got my two Iowa Blue hens and ended up buying a trio of Golden Laced Wyandotts and two splash racing Homers also, have to say I was a bit disapointed in the amout of animals there, there were only three people with chickens and 4 rabbits and two pair of pigeons. A long drive for me but I enjoyed the day away from the house and kids and everything,I am off to bed now so have a good nite, Lynn

You lucky dog!!! how did you score 2 Iowa blue hens, I have been looking for ages for a couple of those hens. What did you give for them if you don't mind me asking.

It was nice to visit with NNBreeder and Buckguy at the Jones auction this evening. Hatching eggs went embarrassingly cheap, as did most of the day old chicks. I have sold eating eggs for more per dozen than many of the hatching eggs brought and many of the straight run chicks went for less than you could buy them at Atwoods - on sale.

Standard size Hens sold for $13 - 16 each on average, with some selling for more. Banty hens and roosters of most sizes/varieties sold for $2 -10.

NNBreeder - I would be interested in the breakdown of your calculation for how much it costs to raise a pullet to laying age. I have about decided to skip selling eggs and sell my hens - but am trying to figure out how much feed I have invested in each hen by the time it is ready to lay. Since feed prices have fluctuated over the past few years (and fortunately are starting to drop again), I am curious whether I have 12 lbs, 25 lbs or more feed in each hen by the time she is about 5 months old and starting to lay eggs.

Wow, that auction sounds depressing

unless you're going there to buy.

I'm stuck at work trying to stay awake til 2 am, but Gerald took some eggs and chicks to the Blanchard auction. He called earlier and said our cuckoo marans eggs sold for over $10 a dozen, but he hasn't called back. I'm waiting!!! Anyway, he said the Blanchard auction was packed with buyers, eggs, chicks, chickens etc. I sure hope that auction did better.

Blanchard definately was better than Jones tonight for sellers.

Cuckoo Maran and Welsummer eggs sold for less than $5 per dozen at Jones this evening. The stands were only about 1/2 full of people. Saipan Jungle fowl eggs went for $6. The salmon golden maran eggs went for about $8 doz. I really felt badly for the sellers of hatching eggs this evening in Jones.

My purchase of the evening was two pigs that probably weigh about 200 lbs each, for $93 each. Their names are Pork Chop and Bacon and they are headed to Camp Freezer as soon as I can get an appointment at our favorite processing plant.

I'm glad you didn't walk away empty handed.

I finally called Gerald and asked about the Blanchard auction. He bought a lot of used egg cartons. From what he told me he paid, I could have bought brand new ones from an internet supplier

Oh, but he said Sam was the seller so it was ok ??? Oh well, we needed egg cartons for Gerald to sell eggs to his coworkers.

He said our chicks didn't sell for much either

but he still came home with some money after buying egg cartons and selling eggs and chicks.

Having purchased egg cartons online, when there wasn't the free shipping promotion going on, my recollection is that the postage added about about 9.5 cents per carton. Sam is a nice guy.

Sorry you are having to work today.
