Knock on wood so far I haven't lost any to the heat. I haven't done anything special so far. I do worry about my broody but I have notice now that she is in her own pen she is getting up to get water. She knocked it over but I don't see that she is eating anything. She has good air flow where she is compared to the coop so maybe that will help.

I had to take the baby goat to the vet this morning. I hope he got him fixed, if not he has to go back for surgery! I am not sure about this goat farming bussiness! If something happens to this thing I will be on a mad hunt for show chickens!

Luvs missed ya being around. I look for you in the mornings!

Stray - Cocci is something all chicks will have in their system, the problem is when there becomes too much. The medicated feed is supposed to supress the ability for it to proliferate so that they can build up a slow immunity to it. If you have the birds on wire instead of litter they have no access to their feces and do not build an immunity. So when they suddenly have access to their feces if they are not medicated the shock of their system being overrun kills them. You do not have to medicate if you have them on litter than is being religiously cleaned so that they are laying in feces all the time. Mark the top of the pasty butts heads', if you notice it is the ones with marks dying - then your problem lies in their bodies getting backed up. I checked my chicks this year at least twice a day, everyone of them and cleaned each that needed it with water and papertowels, then eventually just pulling the fluff under the vent off. My first try I lost all 6 chicks, we are guessing from cocci cause I raised them on wire w/o meds, then once they moved outside they died. I've read of a lot of people on here for one reason or another losing majority of their first brood - I think its the right of passage for chicken raising.

Marking the tops of the head of the ones with pasty butt is an excellent idea - I learn something new on here all the time

I agree, losing chicks is just part of the whole thing. It is frustrating, but sometimes there are no apparent answers and when you do figure out a cause for some chicks, it may not be the answer for others that die. I have become somewhat philosophical about it - and when ordering from a hatchery, generally order twice as many chicks as I want for grown pullets, because if they make it through the first few weeks, there are always hawks, possums, and acts of self-destruction on behalf of the growing chicks (suffocation due to piling on each other rather than getting on a roost and trying to get through a chain link fence when they are too large to get ALL of their body through) - that get about half of my chickens before they come of laying age.

I have had better luck with some hatcheries than with others, regarding the hardiness of the chicks in the first few weeks. McMurry is one that I have always had good results with. I won't mention those that have been less successful, but be careful when buying chicks from hatcheries on Eggbid - past experiences make me wonder whether some are selling their healthiest stock through that venue, particularly when it is just one or two breeds in an order that totally die.

I had a chick wedge itself between a brick and the wall once... it was just to dense to move....DUH....but it was nearly dead when I got to it...I had to really nurse it back to health... they are not the brightest crayons in the box at times.....

Pasty butt can be awful... I have noticeds that my hen raised chicks don't get it... just hatchery chicks....the first batch I had... I felt so bad for them... I had to wash their butts every day and they would just cry.....I sat and cried with them.... now I tell em to suck it up, pull the fuzz off, swipe em with petroleum jelly and that's an end of it... (no pun intended).

Well, sounds like we've all got to keep an eye to the skies for
the next 48 hours or so. Take care, all.

We're gonna let this round of weather clear before we leave
for OKC. So, is everyone going to wear their POOPS shirts to
the restaurant for dinner? I'll keep Pa-Pa's with me until after
the class.....LOL He'd manage to get a drop of blood on it, or
a chicken would manage to do a POOPS number on it.....LOL

Al, check your "regular" email. A "puter" person, I'm not......
and after this....don't wanna be....LOL I "think" you "might"
have a couple of attachments.....no promises.......LOL

I can't imagine why, but we're doing OK up here with the birds
and all the chicks. Has been a hot, steamy mess, but we
usually do have a breeze. But, they're saying it will be 97o
early next week.....not "even" ready for that.

Have a good one !

I am so glad to be back here I have been havin withdraws!!! Have had a really busy last couple weeks and just got my laptop back I just dont know if I can catch since the last time got 133 pages to read!!! Hope everyone fairs through the storms ok!!!
