Grace, sorry about your babies. Every day I go out to the coop expecting huge losses. I have a couple hens moulting. Poor things look like h3ll.

The heat is brutal here and it's worse by you guys. Usually it's the other way around. Weird. I am going to suck it up and set chicken wire fence today. I am going to cut it to length in the house and then take it out and wire it up. Maybe I will survive that way. More worried about the darn red ants than the heat! Doc called me in a script for the runs...again....we'll see. But I'm actually eating some now....not the runs, but food and stuff.

You guys stay safe in the heat

Hope there is something left of Al.

I got 40' done so far.... am taking 36" poultry wire and cutting it into 10' pieces, then cutting it in half horizontally and wiring it to the bottom of the fence. 18" all around. Dumb peeps.

I'm sorry grace about your birds. I lost one of my white cochins the other day... It's an irritating thing to happen... My chicks are in the garage with a heat lamp adjusted properly so I'm not sure of the cause and I'm hoping that there won't be a repeat.

I second that..!. it's way too hot for a heat lamp! A white small watt bulb to give them light for security should be plenty in this weather!

Howdy,
I'm Bo Garrett from Garvin, Oklahoma, a small town where the chickens out number the human residents 10,000 to 1.
Have been breeding and showing chickens for 31 years and now have only cochins in bantams and large fowl.
The oppressive heat is starting to cause me some worry as my big males normally do not handle the intense heat too well. Two years ago I lost 6 males to the heat which constituted my entire line of breeding males. Fans just were not enough when the heat + humidity = 10,000 degrees.
One thing about Oklahoma we have all four seasons; early summer, mid summer, late summer and Christmas!

Bo

Hey Bo....! Glad to have ya! Watch for the other inmates and please don't feed the animals....

I have been worried about my big red roo. He is such a good boy (even if he is a roo). But he seems to get dragged out in the heat. I have my fan in the coop door facing out to try and suck hot air out. Seems to work better that way.

Bless God we have clouds. At least they block the sun in patches and make it easier to work out there. I can remember my grandma telling me that her mom would make her and her brother weed the garden in Enid. (back in the day). She said they would pray for clouds to come for the brief respite they provided. I never understood that. Until I moved here.

Mine don't even have lights on them. Way too hot. The ones in the house have CFLs that give off minimal heat if any.

Yeah I use like a 15 watter....just so they have their little "lamp god" and feel safe. No heat!
