smfamf... sorry guys but everyone has a big misconception here in oklahoma about the quail raising thing... when i got my cortunix.. i checked with my local game warden and he said it did not matter quail are considered wild in ok and we had to get a permit... i got a handlers permit for $10.00 a year and had to have my pens inspected my the game warden and wait on my paper work from the state... that permit does not allow you to sell birds... that requires a seperate permit for i think $45.00 a year which allows you to sell.. that allows the game warden to come inspect anytime day or night, requires a notebook full of paperwork keeping up with hatch numbers, sales who to who from, death numbers etc...... he made it very clear to us that if everything was not kept to par he could confiscate our birds at anytime.. and he told us all this while being nice because he's a friend of ours... now my brother is in arkansas and they do not consider the cortunix game so he does not need any kind of permit but he would if he had bob whites... ...sorry i rambled but there is for sure a lot of misinformation out there on the quail thing and i would hate to see somebody get used as an example one of these days if they decide to crack down... hope everythings going good this morning for everyone it's beautiful here in the hills.....

I am actually thinking of getting my certification for doing the pullorum testing. There just aren't enough people around here to do it. I found a really nice lady in Tulsa that lurks on here (I asked her if she'd heard of BYC) and she is going to do it. Our FFA director had her name. She will actually be showing silkies at the State Fair, when my daughter is showing the Welsummers we got from Okiehen!
Yes, Andi is a very nice person. I've gotten several birds from her, and visit with her often. We're both new to the chickens and enjoy having someone we can call and share the latest "chicken gossip" with. I'm sending her home with some eggs today. I'm interested to see what comes out!
Beth-if you need some eggs, and don't mind a barnyard special, just PM or call me!

Okay, I have a (probably) dumb question.
the pullets I got from Atwoods in Poteau, yesterday, supposedly americana, possibly barred rock, have little blue metal clips run through their little wings.
Should I remove these? When? How? Are they for identification purposes, breed, sex, etc.?
are they hurting them?

Me too, I always take the bands off. If they are stuck in the flesh I would cut them off as close as posible with wire cutters and the stuck part always fell out later. Most just slip right out. Wish our Atwoods here had EE. I looked at 2 diferent stores. No EE.
