Can't wait!

Me either. I have never sold any chicks before. If mine arrive in time I will have some there. Hope I can keep them warm enough.

Beth, the last time I lost adult birds it was almost the same situation you had - during the night something (we believe it to be raccoons) took birds and all that was left was a scant trail of feathers

teach.... thanks for your input on this.. i think it's a pretty interesting issue and it makes you wonder if maybe game and fish doesn't exactly know or not know what the standards are... but we had to show where our eggs originated from and the whole nine yards...it was enough to keep me from selling any of mine... we have been processing all of ours...but not selling anything...i know you see lots of the quail varieties going through the local auctions including the bob whites... and i've always been sort of surprised the wildlife department hasn't had somebody lurking about.. last fall one of the auctions in arkansas had someone show up and issue all sorts of tickets on people buying and selling quail and pheasant without the proper permits.... so i think i'll stay quietly on the side and keep putting mine in the freezer.... the little fat guys are pretty darn good come dinner time... .......

First of all, please don't hurt me....but...whats an EE?

Also I posted elsewhere a question and so far have been completely ignored for going on the second day.....who uses leg bands?
Where to get them?
Will they work on feathered legs?
How else can you ID birds that look alike and might be around long enough to get me confused later?

Also [full of questions] when is the State Fair and when will they show Silkies?
Or do they just have the birds there all the time?

Yikes I'm sorry I am so full of questions but how can I find out things if you don't tell me?

The netting that you put over plants to protect them from birds and critters. it comes in 14 x 14 sheets for about 5 bucks. It has worked GREAT for me. I found it at Wal-Mart and at the hardware stores.

EE is an Easter Egger, They lay colored eggs. Alot of people call them Ameraucana's. If you go to my pet chicken's web site you can see a picture of an Easter Egger.

I don't use bands on my chickens. Eventually if 2 look alike I can always find some difference. I know you can get them at Atwoods and maybe tractor supply. I see no problem if you want to use them. Just make sure they are not to tight.

think I heard the state fair starts sometime around Sept 17th not for sure. Don't know about showing animal. you might try to look it up on the internet??

No problem asking questions. You never know unless you ask.

Easter Egger, often sold by hatcheries as ameraucana/araucana but they do not meet the breed standard of either.

I use them, sort of. It depends really. Usually to identify offspring from a certain pair, or two different lines of the same breed.

I use colored zipties, but you can usually buy actual bands from any farm and ranch store/feed store/online poultry supply store.

Yes

toe punch, nostril punch, removal of webbing between the toes, dubbing the rear toe (don't do that on show fowl)....

The Tulsa State Fair has a poultry show and it is held on Oct. 3, and your silkies would be shown the same day as all the other poultry.

The OKC State Fair does not have a poultry show.

Silkielovr, I was going to try to help you out, but Cuban has already given you excellent advice. I use the colored zip ties to identify chicks from specific breedings. I am going to use the toe punch on the next batch in spring.

Hey guys

For all yall that have brooded your babies in the house... how soon can they be out doors? my RIR and BR chicks are now 4 weeks old... Although the coop is not entirely done yet(all walls are up just no roosts and nest boxes yet and the run is still needing to be put up)... I was wondering if it would be safe to keep them in the 2 story rabbit hutch outside during the day and then just bring them into the coop at night. The rabbit hutch is what I converted into the brooder area...all of the chicks but one have fully feathered out... Tink our tiniest of all the chicks(BR) seems to be the slow growing one... but boy does she have spunk...

I hatched some on the 20th and I have been putting them outside every day when the sun is up, under a shade tree, and bring them in every evening as the sun goes down.
They love it! Lots more room to play.
They are in a cage covered with hardware cloth, wood floor, in the shade as I said with patches of sun if they want.
I'm considering letting them stay out over night in the chicken house, in another big pen, but it is getting cooler now, so haven't done it.
Also It showered here today so they are in my office.....getting way too big all ready for "desk pets"
