Well I made it to Atwoods, got the meds, came home, doctored everyone. Boy was that fun! My local Atwwods only had the Terramycin eye ointment and scouring tablets for calves. I decided to go with the eye ointment, of course.

The only ones that showed any signs of illness were the obvious pullet and the Americauna that Jordan got at POOPS. His bird just had a runny nose. I decided to go ahead and doctor all of them. The sick girl, got Terramycin eye ointment in her affected eye and VetRX on her beak, around her eye, and under her wings. All other adult birds got VetRX on beak and under wings. The quail, chicks, keets, and ducklings got VetRX in their water. I figured it would be easier to do it in water than to try and get all 100 little ones individually. Hopefully everyone will be alright after this. If anyone hasn't tried to use VetRX on adult guineas, I have to warn you, it is fun! My husband held all the birds and I doctored. We were able to round all the birds into the coop. We doctored and released one at a time. All my adult birds are generally free rangers, so it is difficult to get them all rounded up at the same time. I didn't want to wait until bed time because of the cold weather. I still have the sick bird in the pet carrier sitting on my kitchen counter. She is not happy about being locked up.

I want to thank everyone for the advice. I don't know what I'd do without all of you.

Al - ain't nothing danty about meal time around our house! We do use some manners otherwise we don't get fed! i would advice against any sudden movements towards another plate though or passing to close to a plate...the boys bite hard and don't let go!

City - just for the record...Aggies don't loose...we get outscored on occasion...although we don't seem to remember those times real well...

I am impressed you were able to get any medication on an adult guinea. That was probably a Utube moment.

Putting the VetRx in the water, where it will float on top and get on their beaks when they get a drink of water, is a good solution for a large group of birds. If the one with the bad eye isn't better in the morning and you are going to medicate her with the VetRx again, try rubbing some on the roof of her mouth also.

Turkeys of course are much larger, so when I am medicating turkeys with it, I put it on a Q-tip and actually rub the Q-tip up between the slit in the roof of their mouth, which usually causes mucus to come out of their nostrils. I think that on a regular size chicken, that would bruise them too much, but putting the Rx in their mouth won't hurt them and may help. I also agree with putting it under a wing. They usually roost with their head under the same wing each night and one way to diagnose sinus problems is to see if they have sticky feathers under one wing. If so, that is the only wing you need to medicate to provide the benefit of menthol therapy.

Good evening everyone!!! We are just about done with the cochin coop and pen all we have to do is put down the wire on the floor and around the outsides of it and out the nesting boxes in and it will be done!!!!

Welcome home Ricky.
We certainly missed you.
Any luck with the 4 legged animals you were seeking - to provide meat for the freezer?

Well the hunt for the big four legged creatures of which you speak is next weekend but while scouting for those we did manage to get some tree dwelling creatures. They never made it the freezer though.

My guineas choose to either roost with the chickens or sleep on the ground with the ducks every night. Sometimes they even split up, with some in both places. It helps when they feel the chickens and ducks are part of their flock. My ducks refuse to go inside at night. i finally put an old camper shell filled with hay in the pen for them. That way they can at least get out of the wind. All it really took to catch the guineas was to run them into the coop with the other birds. We locked the pop door with my son on the outside. My husband and I were in the coop. He would catch and hold while I doctored. When one was done, we would hollar at Jordan and he would open the door to let the one out. That way we made sure each and every bird got their dose. Thanks for the info on putting the meds in her mouth. I might try that if she isn't better by morning.
