I'm not trying to defend our idiot doctor here, but I do want to point out that direct sale of raw milk is not always illegal as long as it is done from the farm...

http://www.realmilk.com/milk-laws-4.html#ok

I only bring this up because I believe in as direct a line from the farmer to the consumer as possible, and applaud any individual who supports the local producer, and the laws that allow it. There should be more of both.

The probably are not actually "swarming" but it looks like they are cleaning up any sweet residue on the hummingbird feeder. I guess they are bees, and trying to lay in some food for the winter. That top thing resembles a wasp and if they are wasps, all bets are off as I am fairly clueless about them except that they don't do anything according to rhyme or reason.

Honeybees won't try and sting you unless you are close to their hive and they are defending their brood (baby bees) or you are off somewhere and swatting at them.

so does that mean we are going to have a bad winter? my FIL said he'd never seen them do that around here... no, they didn't do any harm, just kind of amazing to watch

I don't think that bees trying to put up as much honey for the winter is a sign of a bad winter - they are just doing what they always do and being "busy as a bee"

Bees actually tend to put more away than they need, which is why beekeepers can "collect rent" from the bees by removing some honey. Of course, a hive that begins the winter with insufficient food will starve over the winter, particularly if the flowers and trees that normally start blooming in February are delayed. Actually, even a hive that has sufficient food can starve over the winter if they chimney up the middle of the hive eating the pollen and honey and don't go to the outside frames and get any honey on them, when they run out of food in the middle of the hive. Most beekeepers are checking their hives right now to see how heavy they are and if they are too light (not enough food for the winter) they will plan to feed the bees through the winter, using feeders inside the hive.

Fried potato's fried until almost done, throw in onions, meat (bacon, smoked sausage or ham) then at the very last eggs, fried until the eggs are done, it is awsome. I will never learn to make it as my hubby fry's potato's nice and crispy where I turn them to mush. He also knows how to drain the grease at just the right time before the eggs.

We make this all the time. The easy way to get the potatoes crispy fast is to use a deep fryer to cook the potatoes and when they are ready put everything in a skillet until its all done. We use the cheap smoked sausage when we make it. And I mean the cheap stuff. The name brand stuff usually ends up having more grease in it.

how cool, i have never heard of anyone else making it! Yep I am all about cheap!

I could never find it either.

Here is what I found about washing soda on wisegeek.com

Washing soda is a highly alkaline chemical compound which can be used to remove stubborn stains from laundry. It also has numerous uses around the house, and it is used in a range of industrial applications as well. Washing soda should not be confused with washing powder, which is a powdered soap used as a detergent; it is also not the same thing as baking soda, although the two compounds are closely related.

The chemical formula for washing soda is Na2CO3, and it is also known as sodium carbonate. It is a salt of carbonic acid, a chemical which produces a wide range of salts collectively known as carbonates. One common source of washing soda is the ashes of plants; for this reason, it is sometimes called soda ash. Sodium carbonate can also be created from sodium chloride, also known as table salt.

In laundry, washing soda accomplishes several things. The high alkalinity of washing soda helps it act as a solvent to remove a range of stains, and unlike bleach, washing soda does not usually stain. It is also used in detergent mixtures to treat hard water; the washing soda binds to the minerals which make water hard, allowing detergent to foam properly so that clothing will come out clean, without any residue.

Many markets carry washing soda, typically with other laundry products. Some companies make mixed detergents with washing soda which are specifically formulated for hard water, and you can also find washing soda on your own. Since sodium carbonate can be dangerous in large quantities, make sure to keep washing soda out of the reach of children and pets, and clearly label the container to indicate that it is caustic. It can be harmful to the eyes, cause irritation to the lungs if inhaled, and may cause abdominal pain or vomiting if large doses are swallowed.

Baking soad & washing soad are not the same things. None of the stores including walmart have it around here.

Yep, I know. I have looked into making my own before, and I looked for all of the items. I found them in the Sand Springs area.
