Okies in the BYC The Original

Hey Okie friends....I need some ideas. As I've posted before we are going to be moving to my parents place across the field. We will be selling our place as soon as everything is settled with the attourney and uncle sam on the estate.

Anyway, we have to get some pens built ASAP. We are going to be starting from scratch as there isn't anything existing now. What I would like is any input that you may have if you were going to build new pens, etc. If any of you have pics, ideas, suggestions, etc. I would be very greatful. The pens we have now are made out of cattle panels and chicken wire with dog houses for shelter. We want to be able to seperate the breeds. We have one big pen with smaller ones branching off of the big one for the different breeds. We thought since we are starting from scratch we would like to build the best thing we could afford. We would like to use the supplies that we already have if possible.

We built the pens we have now just out of instinct with no help. We would love to have input since there are a number of you that have been addicts for a number of years and we would love your expertise. LOL

Thank you all. Donna

I hate the ice, like the snow. I could also do with out the cold. Why can't it be spring year round? Flowers blooming, grass and trees turning green.......

lol I will take Spring, summer & fall year around. Just cut out the winter.

Oh, but Carah...what is life without seeing that fresh snow falling so pure and white. I don't like the ice because of the damage but I sure LOVE the snow. My husband always says the snow makes him think of Jesus....pure and white.

And best of all is building snowmen, building a fire in the fireplace, hot chocolate, pot roast in the oven, homeade cinnamon rolls fresh out of the oven, sledding with lots of friends and family..... and riding the 4 wheeler across the snow covered pasture. OOH! what fun.

We always start calling folks to come spend the night(s) when we think the snow is coming in. We tell them to pack their clothes, bring a blowup mattress and come to have a good time. I know I'm weird...just won't ever grow up I guess. I love to have FUN!

My only suggestion is to make sure that your Coop is tall enough t to walk in for cleaning & egg collecting. The small coop MAllen & I made seems like it would be good for breeding for the bantam breeds.....

NOt much help but there ya go.

Good to see you btw!

Hello everyone. Just got back from picking up the kids' homework for the past two days. I swear it weighed about 75 pounds.

I hate winter too!

I am straight out addicted to BYC and Facebook. I'm proud of it.

Jeannie, I didn't notice a big mess when I came. Maybe I'm used to it. Just about every yard in my town has trash piled in it. Mine consists of a dilapidated garage in back that I can't do anything about. Property owners won't let us tear it down and we're not sinking money into it for someone else's gain. I hope everything goes well with the kinship. It is almost always better for the kids to stay with family and most courts know that.

Carah, I hope that precious baby is doing well and everything turns out alright.

Donna, I know someone will help you get some good pens built. I personally like Matt's pens. I'm sure others have their opinions though.

Well I'm off to check my FB games.

You are not weird at all, if only we got snow!! I do like playing in the snow but we don't get enough of it. I think I will always be a summer time girl.

Poor Matt! No alergies here or at least nothing that is bad.

My little nephew is still in the hospial, I haven't heard anything yet on test results but so far he is doing fine. Hopefully they will get released with clean bill of health. THank you for asking.

What an incredibly rude thing to say. And these are your neighbors? Right neighborly of them.

Don't worry about it, Jeannie. You and yours know how hard you are working. I can attest to the condition of the place before you moved in, so I believe you when you say it is taking some time.

The world is full of jackasses and they have to live somewhere. Sometimes we are unlucky enough it just happens to be next door.

Our neighbors werent saying it the company they had said it...because they were company visitng from outta state and they had been walking the neighbors property and happend to be wondering who would have crap all over the place... lol I guess I got the brunt of the comment... Our neighbors are wonderful wonderful people this just happened to be a son in law or something... Cause even my neighbors were like oh no when the guy was saying what he was saying...

Oh yea... did I mention that one day while mowing I nearly killed my mower because there was a bed frame covered in weeds and I went about my merry way mowing and WHOOPOW I killed the blade because I hit it... I was so HOT

believe me I was saying a few course words...

You've probably already checked on this, but just in case...look at the Coops pages on BYC (first link below). There are tons of examples people have done - out of all types of materials and of all different sizes. You could get some great ideas their and adapt them to fit your situation. There is also an entire forum on Coops and Run Designs if you have particular questions (second link).

So here are some photos of the new (2nd) bantam breeder coop I built and the change that I made. I put this change in the first one as well.

First here is a photo of both of them, the one on the right is the first one I built and I have it boarded up for winter already. The one on the left is the new one

On this inside shot you can see the cut piece of sonotube that I put in for a nest box on the left and back in the right rear corner you can see the access hole to the run. It's 22 inches wide and 12 inches deep, framed with 2 x 4 so that the bedding does not fall down into the run.

This is the plug that will plug up the run access hole. This way I can keep the chickens in the coop if it gets to cold or if for any other reason I don't want them in the run. The 2 x 4 on edge is the handle.

and here is a photo of the ramp leading up into the coop.

Add chicken and season to taste.....
