I read Living on Less, it was a really interesting read. There is another book called "Eating for $5 a Day", it is a bit more radical but is a good companion to Living On Less. I am working towards becoming a lot more self sufficiant. Part of that is working towards living within my means and becoming debt free. I am wanting get a garden ready for the spring and was wondering if maybe we "all the BYC Okies" on here should grow different things so we can trade produce. We are planning to grow some more unusual veggies and fruits. Just one of my plans towards self-sufficiancy.

Dad's motto was "Don't plant anything you can't eat" Even when we lived in Wichita our grass portion of the yard was very, very small. The rest was veggies.

I've been wanting to plant a garden! But we don't have a whole lot of space, so I won't be growing things that we don't already buy in the grocery store.
Muesky, I will have to look for those books. I'm finishing up a gardening class through OU right now. Of the three books we had to read, I found the most beneficial to be "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle." The author is humorous, telling her own family stories, and has recipes and instructions at the end of each chapter. And she had turkeys and chickens, so she's gotta be great! Lol

When Teva and I lived in Garden City one of our neighbors took a strip about 2 feet wide along his fence and planted all kinds of things. Then at the base of his trees he planted climbers like cukes. Tomatos went into the flower beds as did peppers and any type of bush plants. His garden was small but mighty. Fist time I ever used a ladder to pick cukes.

I'm pretty sure He doesn't hang up on people. You must have dialed the wrong number. Re-dial the number and try again.

I think this is a good idea. I always try to plant a garden each summer. I always plant tomatoes, basil, pepper, cantelope, cucumbers, and squash. This year I also was growing corn, watermelons, cilantro, lemon grass, and eggplant. I still have growing are cauliflower, celery, and cabbage. I am hoping to do more and more each year and possibly get a better deep freezer next year. But I love the idea of starting our own produc swapping, kind of like a coop.

I think you were asking shidalgo if he was from Slapout earlier, Cammie...since he mentioned going to the hospital in Guymon. (He's in Hooker, by the way.)

Hey Kate - during my catching up this morning I saw that you had a massacre at your place - I'm so sorry! It sounds like you may have met OKBetsy, though - she is sweet! I hope you replenish your flock soon. But it's horrible to lose your laying hens!!

The website for the Oklahoma State Beekeeper Association is www.okbees.org
It has the various local clubs listed, but not much information specifically about bees. There are several good books about beekeeping, including Beekeeping for Dummies. The club that meets in Tulsa is huge (North East Oklahoma Beekeeper's Association) and they offer beginning beekeeper classes. There is also a club that meets in McAlester (Southwest Oklahoma Beekeeper's Association)

It was a joke about having to go to a hospital out in the Pandandle. I thought he might really be having to go to Amarillo or come to OKC.
I picked Slapout because I know that about the only thing there is a store. We used to stop there on the way to our Colorado.
Maybe I should have said Tyrone.
