I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the show..... I wasn't sure I would be able too. Just getting over a virus. I have to wait till the feed store is open to get feed, take care of the critters, then I am on my way. I should be there around 9:30 or 10.

Woke up to a 40* morning, which is much better than our mornings have been! I hope we have a beautiful day today!
Gotta feed and water the animals, eat breakfast, and finish loading things, but then we will be on the way to Shawnee!!!!!!

Well I got away from the house late so I'm not going to make it to ihop, I'm sitting at the mcdonald down from the expo. Heading to the expo shortly to see if I can get first dibbs on some Andy Barnes bb reds. See y'all there!!

I am saying GOOD MORNING and then be off, considering this thread may die with everyone up at SHAWNEE and kicking up their tail feathers and all, while the rest of us are silking... I mean sulking cause we couldnt make it for one reason or other... I guess I will go sulk in the kitchen and make a batch of Oatmeal cookies for the hubby. You all have fun and safe drive if you are heading to the poultry show and I expect a post card. that reads.... WISH YOU WERE HERE..LOL

I hope everyone has a great time at Shawnee! Can't wait to hear the great stories and showing, buying, and selling triumph! My aunt has asked us to help her out with some stuff today, so we are staying around here.

What Jer-man said!

Quenston - thanks for the update - be excited but don't stress about the show. Don't forget...they're just chickens!!
(don't tell anyone I said that.)

Go Neecy! I'm in Haskell, just west of Muskogee. Let's get the group together somewhere around Muskogee.

that would be wonderful to have one near us...!!

all of my flock are handling the cold ok- what does a frostbit comb look like?? my roo is getting kind of a darker muddy look to his comb...

Check the BYC threads for BYC members in Canada. They have sub-zero temperatures and see serious frostbite problems. Most will counsel others to let the frostbite alone. The blackened areas will fall off on their own. I'd be hesitant to dub unless infection has been identified. I've got roosters who have a coop but insist on sleeping outside some nights, especially when it's about 12 degrees. They have dark tips on their combs and dark crescents on their wattles where the wattles get wet when they drink. Vaseline makes a decent protective coating. You'll hear arguments about whether it makes any difference. Be your own judge. Anyone who says strip, cover yourself with Vaseline, and then say it still works is not clear headed. Chickens have feathers. The comb and wattles are a small portion of the bird's body. A more logical experiment would be to cover one hand with Vaseline, go into the cold, and then make a judgment. Best of luck with your birds. I'm a fussy hen mother, so I often put the birds with large combs and wattles in the barn or shop when I know the temperatures will be in single or double digits. My DH says it not necessary. He's probably right, but it keeps me from worrying.

well we are finally off to shawnee. not bringing the brahma roos, hubby don't think its worth it. So if you are interested or know someone, I can post a pic later and you can make an offer. I don't know what to ask for them. No idea about high and low in chickens. So I'll just post later.
still hoping to bring home some call ducks!
Hope everyone has fun!

Tanya

I have read that a comb can get frostbit in temps as high as 38 deg. if the humidity is high enough such as in a poorly ventalated coop. The cold climates like Canada should have a very snug coop that is kept just above freezing for the bird's health.
