Fleece doesn't need a finished edge :wink wink:

I know it doesn't ravel, but I don't care for fringe and it seems sort of cheap to give a blanket that is a length of fleece with the selvage cut off. I like to put a blanket stitch of some sort on it or when I want a hand project, I take along a fleece blanket and put a rolled hem on it by hand. I generally make my fleece blankets 3 yards long - plenty long enough to tuck under your feet and pull up over your shoulders.

So we just got home a little while ago after a big day. We ended up going outside and sledding most of the afternoon, then came in to realize we had a surprise birthday party to attend. Now we are home and are watching 'Dirty Jobs' and he is at a place where they make goose down, but he is now gutting the goose and disecting the gizzard. I asked Charlotte if she would help me do this, she said 'No way Jose'. However, she sure did seem interested in the show and was not cringing as he is pulling guts and gizzards and such out of the goose.

See, I didn't know it was a present. For my couch, I just used an unfinished edge. For presents, I do hem them. I do cheat and use my serger, mainly because it's faster and looks better. My hand sewing skills aren't very strong. I believe in embracing sewing technology. Now my older sister (the younger of the twins) has done Jacobean applique (a quilting technique) that has won many awards. I tell people that all my hand sewing skills ended up taking residence with her.

Al and Q - you followed the most important rule of darning - just get er done......

I think that I will see if I can mend my fishing net, tomorrow. I left it on top of the rabbit cages and the end of it is no longer intact. Sort of hard to catch the rabbits that got loose with a hole the size of a beachball in the end of the net. I am hoping that there is some logical way to weave it back together, maybe I will use fishing line for strength.

ZIP TIES would be my weapon of choice for that repair, I did the same thing this past summer. I plan to make a catching sick come spring, used in catching fowl by the legs, I think I'll give that a try.

So I bought myself a sewing machine for christmas during the black friday. I don't know how to sew at all, started watching the cd that came with it, but I get distracted and start reading BYC instead, hehehe. It is so slow and boring. I think I really need Faerie to come over and teach me, because I need to sew some curtain to insulate all of these old windows in this old house. We have 7 large windows alone in our living room, and it gets pretty darn drafty.

Forget the CD. Watch Youtube videos instead. Seriously.

Only thing I check when/if I get a new machine is the directions on how to thread it. Might see what we can do about teaching you how to sew curtains. Curtains are easy. Take a length of fabric. Hem all sides (fold over a quarter inch, then fold over a quarter inch again. Iron. Sew down). Fold one side down to make a hole/pocket to slide the curtain rod through. Iron it flat. Sew. Done.

Worst part of sewing curtains is how long they are. I usually just press the hems then sew, but if it's really long, you may have to pin it in down. I hate pinning stuff. I pin as little as possible. Otherwise I end up full of pin-holes because I forget the little boogers are in there.

Faerie, have you ever considered doing custom sewing to supplement your income? The lady that I used to pay to serge my fleece blankets quit doing that kind of sewing.

Plus, it sounds like some of us need curtains.
