My boyfriend and I went to the Harrah auction tonight. Less than 30 people there, and there were less than 20 chickens, all standard breeds, mostly roosters. No chickens went for more than around $5 each. There were guineas, but the owner PO'd them because nobody wanted to pay more than $5 for them and they wanted $9 each.
Hopefully there will be a better turn out next week.
Anyway, I bought 14 standard araucana eggs for $2.25 from a lady in the parking lot, and she said they're pure bred. I'll see if they'll hatch. At least I didn't go home empty handed!
I think I should take some chickens & guineas there next time, along with some eggs to sell. It looks like my kind of fun on a Saturday night!
Grace, I raised royal palm turkeys last year, hatched over 100, and sold some of their eggs. I got tired of all the turkeys last fall & sold them all. Anyway, I hatched the eggs alongside my chicken eggs, and never had a problem. They're larger than chicken eggs, but they fit ok in my auto-turner standard egg cups. They have a longer incubation and hatch in 26-28 days though.
