Your day sounds like mine, except we start classes next Thursday.

I teach Art at Jackson Middle School in Oklahoma City. Where is your school?

I used to teach middle school (Art and English), and I've taught at the grade school level as well. I'm now teaching visual arts to high school students in Muskogee. The kids are great, and our campus is nice, but upcoming cuts are sure to cause problems. I would probably be invited back into the English department if the arts were dropped (due to budget cuts), but now that I'm back in an art room, I know I'd have a hard time giving it up. The kids who don't know me refer to me as that weird lady in the art room. My former English students tell them, "You'll get used to that. Just wait till she brings in chickens for us to draw!" I'll be writing grants all year to get supplies into my storage room. It looks like Mother Hubbard's cupboard right now.

Percival Jr. sat on my knee today when I refilled his water. He's going to be the head rooster in the Speckled Sussex pen next year. He's only four months old, and already he crows louder than his buddy, a one-year-old Light Brahma rooster.

It is a steel metal building with several doors that will be open to the outside. Most adult chickens and rabbits will be kept outdoors with tarps up for shade and fans running. Inside, there will be large industrial sized fans and so far, it has been mostly comfortable at the back tables because there are fans close by. With the air moving, you can almost pretend the temperature isn't 90 degrees. Ice cream bars sell out however, if that tells you anything.

My rabbits are all layed out like that - even with fans and constant misters going. My rabbit barn is so damp that mushrooms are growing out of the straw under the cages.

I found out today that I may get as much as 1,000.00! I was expecting nothing. I know I will order paper, good colored pencils and a gallon of glue. Everything else I can stretch. 1,000.00 is really not much when I will have about 350 kids this year. Most days I really like my job. I would like to bring my dog to school but he needs to get a therapy dog certification first.

My school building is NOT nice. Built in the 1930's, it once was beautiful but defered maintanance has destroyed it. There is asbestos and black mold and audiotorium is scarry; ceiling tiles and plaster look like they are falling. But the building is workable, my room; the old home economics kitchen - lot of sinks and cabinets, but kind of crowded and on the 2nd floor without an elevator ( I have arthritic knees!) I try not to fuss about what I can't change.

I don't know about anything funded by Chesapeake but we have the Oklahoma City Public School Foundation Warehouse that is a non-profit funded by alot of groups and individuals. They don't have alot of art supplies though.

P&B,

Are you referring to Allied Arts in OKC? It's weird, because I bookmarked their home page last week intending to look at their educational outreach programs and small grant programs. There's usually a large grant sponsored by the state dept. of education. I think the deadline this year is the end of September. I'm still making lists of all the places I need to inquire. I really need to write a big grant and get some computers and digital editing and video editing software. My art students would benefit from learning to use the tools many advertisers use today.

The article I read was about the Teacher's Warehouse in OKC that is run by the Foundation for Oklahoma City Public Schools. Here is the link http://www.newsok.com/article/3483053?searched=teacher%20school%20supplies&custom_click=search
After
reading it again I can see where it would have limited value to the two of you. Poco - I hope you have huge success with your grant writing.
My mother was an Art teacher and we were raised with art books of all kinds in the bookshelves. I didn't get any of the art genes, but have appreciated her gifts of artwork through the years. Before I ever began raising poultry, I enjoyed her water color pictures of baby chicks. It makes me sad when schools begin cutting art programs because of budget problems. Art programs are often the only exposure kids have to art other than their own doodling in the margins of their notebooks.

Question....
Any of my fellow okies ever tried this too keep predators from digging in? If so how did it work or how do you think it will work.
My Boyfriend suggested that I get some 80lb sackcrete sacks and line the outside of the run and water them down so that they will set into huge concrete blocks....
I can't dig a trench around my run because of huge trees around it. So I am having to be creative. I am reluctant to use a hot wire because I don't want my dogs shocked....Any ideas?

Thanks
Ivy
