cool thats what we will go with buff japs. I didnt even mean or knew right away i had bought them. I just wanted other two that was in there with them. Guess i need to listen closer to what the auctioner is saying.

Betsy, I am with you on thinking you should go ahead and get a puppy now.
There may be times that the puppy is annoying to Sasha and cause her some stress so if that becomes an issue, you would have to separate them for part of the day.
When we got our last puppy, (she is 1 and half years old now) our older dog seemed to like her and played with her but she got tired of the playing and the puppy never did.
Even now the younger one wants to play so much that we have to keep them separated part of the time because the older dog doesn't want to put up with the younger one.
The older dog likes to play with the pup, but only for short periods of time.
She would rather sleep and the "pup" won't leave her alone.

does it have a unique odor to the discharge? That discharge can build up and destroy the eye, unless it is expressed out. But if it has a strange odor, it is very contagious, so separate her from the rest of the flock, wear gloves and don't let the discharge fall to the ground where the other chickens might come into contact with it. She will need antibiotics - I will bow to the expertise of someone else who has successfully treated this. I have treated it in the past with penicillin tablets that a vet gave me - just shove them down their throat twice a day - but there are meds that are available w/o prescription as well.

P&B is right on. She is being kind by just saying it may have an odor because sometimes it flat stinks really bad. But you should be able to sniff around her head for a "fowl" (pun intended) odor even if it hasn't got to the rotten smelling stage.

If as PB says you can get the stuff out of the eye (more on that later) then it is caused by an infection, probably respiratory. If it is just white, like the eye ball is coated over then it more than likey was pecked and she will just be blind in that eye or have limited vision.
I can't tell from the pics.
Now about getting the stuff out. If you don't continue to remove it, it will continue to build up and harden.
Some people refer to it as being like cottage cheese, which it is when it is smaller but as it grows it begins to be more like the yolk of a boiled egg. If it is small you can use your thumbs (wear rubber gloves) to gently squeeeze it out.
If it has got to the hardened point then you will have to remove a little at a time with tweezers and some sort of pointed tool. I have used a tooth pick before and it worked well. I broke off the tip so that it would be less likely to poke her eye.

You can give Tylan 50 shots. I can't remember the dosage right now but I gave mine shots twice a day.
You might check with NN breeders about the right dosage.
I am sure he will be on here later.
It goes without saying that you should be as careful as possible as not to poke the eye or squeeze so hard that the pressure causes injury.

Thanks for the update Maribeth - I'm so excited about his progress - it surely did seem touch and go for awhile. I'm glad you offered him grits to let him know we love him! Please give him and Lou my best when you see them next.

a bitter sweet moment of feeling excited and sorrowful on the situation if you know our families dynamics I am sure you know where I am having to come from.

Came home from running errands to see our goose stuck in the run while all the chickens are out and about?

of course he starts honking at me to let him out.. ha ha I retorted with YOU SILLY GOOSE..... I think the chickens convinced him to let them out and in the process they shut him in.....

So after a craigslist search I found a Moonlight bator made in marlow Oklahoma. Spent all day trying to find a way to get this thing as I dont have a running vehicle capable of transporting big things. Finally after hours and hours and I mean literally Hours was 10:30 pm before I ever made it to shawnee. I started trying to find my way at around 9 am. I finally got the bator home and fired up to check it out. Seems to run like a champ holds the humidity levels wonderfully, the temp doesnt seem to fluxuate gonna let her purr for a couple days to make sure it stays consistant. heres a Pic of our first bator.

cant wait to give her a whirl.

It's raining here! I know I'll probably get sick of rain here pretty soon when it starts to be regular again, but after this summer we've had it's still a novelty. I'm glad I took the precaution of putting everyone's food under cover so it wouldn't get wet. I was feeling pretty smug until I looked out and saw our younger dog sitting out in the rain and had to go bring them both in the house.
