Just posted the pics on the vermiponics thread I started a few weeks ago. Yes I plan on growing plants, this one is indoor so I will grow plants that do not need pollination (lettuce, broccoli, spinach, chard). If it works and I expand it to outdoors I'll try all the veggies and stick to the ones that work.

The concept is very intriguing to me, if it works the way it is suppose to it cycles the same water (very water conservative) like hydroponics, but you do not use chemical grow agents or fertilizers, you use fish poop (aquaponics) or worms (vermiponics) or a combo of both.

I also intend to do a little experiment that I have not read just brainstorming over. Once the system is going and the plants are growing I intend to add a little chicken poop to the mix, should be dilute enough not to burn any plants, that's the hope anyway, we'll see should be a few weeks. I will plant Sun or Mon if the system runs smoothly over the next few days.

That thread is in the hobbies forum. I don't know how to link

Kassandra,
Worm castings are a really rich fertilizer, so I can understand how they would be beneficial to the plant growth. Chicken poo is so high in nitrogen that it generally needs to "cool" for several months so it doesn't burn plants, but since one solution to that problem is lots of water to dilute the nitrogen, it may work well. I will look for your thread in the hobby section. I learn something new every day!

Joe - I'm headed to Brushy Saturday for the noon auction and then to Broken Arrow in the evening. Please send me a PM about a week before you go the the auction near Bentonville next time. I will pay for half the gas and buy you lunch! I wish I had been able to stay to see Betsy's birds sell at Chupps, but I had to be in CVille before noon. Next time I will block out the whole day. Do the items out in the big field sell in the afternoon? I saw a bunch of golf carts driving around as I left, but I didn't hear anyone auctioning anything off. If figured they were scouting the rows before starting the auctions out there. I didn't have my truck Saturday, so I didn't allow myself to look at anything other than poultry.

coral , i guess ill see ya saturday , they changed the work schedule again , i dont go in until 2 pm now lol , i swear they keep me confused half the time with all the changes , but owell , im going to pick up some ameraucana roos early sat morning and i know i wont need all of them , but idk if i will take them to the auction to sell or not yet , they are pure , will be coming from rose konold from mason creek farms , so if anyone is interested ill have a few extras im sure , plus i have to get ahold of grace to pick those birds up , coral are you near grace

I don't understand it all but am curious to know more! So the water doesn't stay in the plant bed all the time? What do you feed worms? Are we talking about just regular dirt worms?

Good morning everyone

Teach - seeing your signature line reminded me that I learned the different variations of an Aggie's style of "Whoop" and the importance of the class ring's direction (my nephew explained it this past weekend.)

I now better understand why Aggies wear their class ring so proudly.
After assisting me in putting leg bands on some muscovey ducks, my nephew came to the conclusion that if he ever has the opportunity to own property and farm animals, he will likely not include poultry in the mixture. I am working on changing his negative perception of poultry

The system is called flood and drain, and is just as it sounds several times throughout the day the grow bed is flooded from the water storage tank (blue bin) then drained into the drain bucket (white bucket), then poured back into the water storage tank. The margarine containers imbedded in the grow medium (rocks) have big holes cut out of them and they will be filled w/ kitchen scraps that worms like (no onions or citrus or meat). Yes, composting worms.

Hello everyone, good to be back on after getting the computer fixed.
I haven't gone back and caught up on all the posts but I have been suffering from the BYC dt's.
Happy Veteran's to everyone and a special thanks to the veterans.
Sorry I wasn't here to wish all of the Marines a Happy Birthday.
So from Monty Zuma Hall happy belated birthday to all of you Marines and thanks.
I am gonna go back and catch up now.
Hope to see many of you guys at Blanchard on Saturday.

Teach, you need to leave early so you don't get snowbound !
