Thanks for the vet info Cammie, I need to call them & probably call a few other places to compare prices. Yeah, I need to get pictures of bunnies, chicks, new kitties & pyrenees puppies & all the other critters. What I should have done at the animal shelter was to wait until after the lady surrendered the kittens and then filled out the paperwork to pre-adopt 2 of them ... the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter only charges $25 per animal if more than one is adopted at a time ... otherwise it's $65 for one animal, and they spay/neuter and vaccinate. I was worried that the animal shelter might put these kittens to sleep before they become adoptable, since the place is so full of animals this time of year. Every cage there is full.

I think I need to become a volunteer at a shelter when I retire.

Congratulations on the new litter! Poor momma rabbit! It sounds like she has spunk about her! I sure hope the stress of that auction and heat didn't cause her to have the babies too soon.

Luvz, any more babies yet? Hope to see some pictures! My Bun Bun is a neutered male, and he is still that picky. *ha* Last night the water bottle leaked a little. I guess he was trying to clean it up, he scooted everything to that corner of the cage. *haha* Hope your moma bunny is doing well.

Carla, don't work at the shelter, you would bring home even more than you do now! I used to work at PetsMart and I lived in a zoo. *ha* Can't wait to see pictures of all your new babies!

Howdy all! This is my first post to these forums.....figured Okies was a good place to start! We just got our first chooks in May.....still no eggs and undeniably spoiled!

I am loving every minute of all the BYC forums and hope to hook up with some fellow Okies as I learn/read more!

A tiny bit about me.....mom of 6 kids.....(4 boys, 2 girls), 7 dogs....(all "saved" from the pound).........6 cats......(all "saved" too) 7 chickens......don't have a clue what kind......but we love them all! and one very tolerant husband:)

Only the 2 babies left there was one stillborn. I really am wondering if the heat didn't do something. If she was this far along I do not think she should have been at the auction she could have had the babies right there in the steamy hot. Well don't know too much aboiut bunny genetics but she was either bred to a spotted buck or a white buck all 3 of the babies are spotted now but I think when the grow there fur at least 1 will be striped. I will get pics later when they are out of the nest.

You know your children are around your chickens too much when............my sister came over yesterday to help me get the dead baby out and check on the others. When she walked in the door my soon to be 5 year old said ............"SHHHHHHHHHHH! the rabbit is laying her babies."

Howdy geckomama, Great to have you with our clan of Okies. Hope to hear lots from you. We have well over a hundred listed on this thread but we don't hear from a lot of them. Then there is me who talks too much.
Where in NE Oklahoma are you from? I am originally from Green Country myself but the southern part. I will add you to our list.

thanks! I am actually in the Jenks area.......new to this group of chooks........but grew up in Oregon with LOT'S of chooks!

I love the fact that my kids are all getting a chance to be able to raise some and hoping maybe they might want to join 4-H with a few. I was in 4-H as a kid and loved it! I did rabbits, goats, chickens and even cooking/sewing.....LOL!

My poor DH just spends most of his time rolling his eyes at me.......and shaking his head.....but after almost 29 years he just kinda gives into whatever I bring home

I take a few days off, and you guys go and get all chatty on me.

Welcome to all the new members! This is one of the most helpful and friendly boards I have been a part of. I hope you'll love it here as much as I have.

The rain brought mixed blessings for us too. The grass is almost green again, but it's growing too, and too wet to mow. We'll have a fun time when it finally does dry up.

My one little bird with a bad leg didn't manage to find shelter from the storm night before last and I woke up to find her caked in mud. Poor thing. I moved her into the shed, and she's all dry now, the mud is gone through a combination of me rubbing it off and her shaking it off, but she is still really dirty. I haven't exactly figured out how to go about cleaning a chicken. I'm also trying to figure out if we're having wing problems now too. She wasn't moving her wings very well when I found her and I couldn't figure out if it was the weight of the mud, or if she managed to actually hurt herself again.

All told, I'm feeling like the worst chicken mom on the planet. I was hoping I would learn enough from this one bird to figure out how to take care of a flock, but it appears that all I'm learning is what not to do. Now, I'm torn with the decision of letting my baby go or keeping her and wondering if I'm really doing everything I can for her. Maybe being a chicken mom just isn't in the cards for me after all.

Even the most experienced chicken experts have things happen to their birds. Some things are just going to happen.
Don't give Up! Do the best you can and keep going.

I don't know your whole chicken set up and situation but to me it is just as easy to take care of a dozen chickens as it is to care for just one. A little more expensive but just as easy.
We all lose some of our chickens at one time or another
hit.gif
and it isn't ever easy but as you can see by the number of folks on BYC we don't give up.

If this "little one" doesn't make it, hang in there and get a dozen more.
