You have found a wonderful group of folks who either live in Oklahoma or wish they lived in Oklahoma.

Sorry that I failed to greet you properly this morning. I was on my phone when I read posts this morning and forgot to go back and see if there was anything to which I wanted to respond.

I agree - Marans are cool birds. I have been surprised to learn that there are quite a few varieties of them. Personally, the cuckoo marans are not my favorite color pattern, but I really like the blue copper, black copper and wheaten varieties of marans.

Did you get some of Carla and Gerald's maran eggs at Cement? The eggs from their flocks seem to have a very high percentage of hatch. You can generally tell which are eggs from their flock, because they are clearly labled with a printed lable on the top of the egg carton.

It apparent that you are not yet addicted to hatching eggs, since you only home from an auction with only one dozen hatching eggs.

Hello fellow Okies! My family and I live in Tulsa, and we're first-time chicken owners. It's been a nice weekend! So nice, that my husband and I spent most of the time in the backyard building the frame for our chicken coop. We both got horribly sunburned, especially his back. He's from the east coast, so I told him that he's now officially a redneck with that sunburn. He disagreed, but then I pointed out that he's drinking beer and building a chicken coop, too. I'm a born and raised Okie from Ponca City. It's good to see so many others on BYC!

Mark your calendar for May 14 since that is when we will be having a big gathering in Fletcher (Lawton area) to visit, eat, swap poultry, eat, etc. It will be a lot of fun and it is always great to put faces with "screen names"

What kind of chickens do you have and did you begin with chicks or older birds?

Evening all! We are watching the country music awards, wife loves to holler "and there's another Okie"! Our stea is blessed with a lot of talent.
It was march wind time here today also, bad storms predicted tomorrow.
I got out and sold a bunch of pigeons today, also took in trade a nice trio of standard turkens! One hen has a bow tie but the other hen and roo have nothing clear to their crop! Enjoyed working outside this afternoon, then we went and had our picture taken(it is gardening time you know!lol)

Welcome to the new people, jump right in and tell us about your birds and your wants and want nots!lol

We started out a couple weeks ago with three Buff Orpington pullets from Sutherlands (Camilla, Pika, and Liza Manelli), then we stopped by Lee's feed store, out near Catoosa, and got an Australorp pullet (named Peanut) a couple weeks ago. Then, we went to Atwoods and got a couple from their "Assorted Bantams and Pullets" bin. I'm really hoping that one is a cochin and one is a silkie. I'm not sure. They are very cute, though. My co-worker has loaned me a large wire cage to keep them in the garage. They seem to do pretty good out there, but we've had them in a temporary wire pen in the backyard this weekend. I had weight the pen down with some scrap wood with all this wind!

We enjoyed visiting with many great Okies at the Cement auction last night

We had so much fun visiting, that we forgot to bid on anything and came away empty handed

I was sorry to see that Al was suffering from that awful virus

GET WELL SOON AL!

This morning, Gerald, our daughter, grandaughter and I made a quick trip to Mary's Swap Meet. I say quick, because as soon as we began walking thru the aisles, we realized the strong wind and dust and dirt was sandblasting us! We could barely see anything because of the sand in our eyes. It made me think about the dustbowl days of Oklahoma. I saw a documentary on the dustbowl days a few months ago, and remember them saying many people died from dust pneumonia.

We did see Michael Daugherty at Mary's selling birds. I guess he must have had his pockets full of rocks to keep from blowing away.

I hope to see lots of Okies at the Blanchard auction this coming Saturday. Maribeth, that includes you! We haven't seen you at an auction in ages.

What color are the turkens? When are you bringing them to your friends in Oklahoma (since they aren't bantam, you surely won't want to keep them

I haven't been healthy enough to attend an auction in ages. I am sick and tired of being tired and sick. I think the last auction I went to was Cement the first Saturday in March and have only been to about 3 auctions this year - period.

You have certainly started your flock in the time honored traditional way - chicks first, housing second

Cages actually work well until the chicks get too tall to stand up in the cage - or you get tired of cleaning it out every few days.
