I talked to a lady who bought a couple pair of Juvenile Silver Sussex. She said they were 6-8 weeks old.

Importing is not all that expensive:government forms are around $125 if I remember correctly.

The hassel is that you have to have a vet on the other end that will sign off on the papers. However, if you are coming from somewhere like the UK then that is not a big deal either.

The cost to ship will be the largest expense and that is possibly something like $250 for a young trio.

So, overall you'd be looking at maybe $500 for a breeding trio, if that. Since the paperwork is the same whether we are talking 1 bird or 30 birds: the major cost is the shipping.

Other than the cost, the biggest deal is going to be the hassel of the whole thing.

Actually, the only thing that makes those chickens 'rare' is that they are new imports. Nothing more!

There are folks that are always attracted to the new thing that no-one else has yet. So be it.

Wow...Schweiger....Most of those pairs are $399.00....so almost $200.00 for an eight week old chick.....(?)

I believe they also have to be quarantined for 30 days as well saladin. You have to pay a per day fee for the upkeep of each bird which includes feed, water and cleaning.

For the first few months that their "rare" bird hits the market they only offer juvenile pairs. Once they know that the pairs that they have already sold are old enough to start laying eggs ONLY then do they offer chicks at a cheaper price. They have learned to "milk" their birds for all they are worth. People think that since they comf fro GF and are IMPORTED that they are super birds so they are willing to pay the big bucks for.

I know a fellow here in SC that rec'd Ko's illegally. When the State Vet found out they asked the fellow if he wanted to keep them. He said yes, so they put his place under quarantine for a year with quarterly inspections. At the end of the year, the birds became officially legal.

I found it all very interesting.
