Old and Rare Breeds

Hi Illia
I am searching for a Redcap breeder but have had no luck in finding one. So just to get a start I placed a order for 25 chicks from Ideal Poultry. I may be wrong but I am beginning to think Ideal Poultry may gets their Redcap chicks from Murray McMurray Hacthery or got their start from them in the past. I would not be surprised if Sand Hill Preservation did not get their Redcap start from Murray McMurray also. Being that Murray McMurray has had the Redcaps for a very long time now most of the Redcaps here in the States may have come from them at some point and time. This is just my opinion and like I said I may be wrong. Please let me know what you think of this and please correct me on anything I am wrong on.

Call Ideal Poultry Farms and ask for Ross Windham. He can tell you where they got their start and how close to the SOP these are. I have had several wonderful conversations with Ross. Very helpful fellow.

Hi JimsFarmStand
I have sent a few emails to Ross Windham and both times he sent me a email back saying they do not keep records on were there stock comes from. Last night I sent a PM to Teri Adcox. She was very helpful with the breed I ordered from them last year.

I will be getting some cream barbanters soon and would like to inhance the breed if I can.
I understand the current birds in the US came from just a few birds brought here from overseas
how can you get new blood into these birds if no one else has brought any more over here?

good question about the cream brabanters, seems if you cannot find any then there is no way to get new blood into them.

I have great news..you all will think I am nutty..but my Rhode Island Whites turned 6 mo old today, the 27th, and surprise, there in the coop was the first egg !
Set up in a store bought egg carton with X-Large white eggs for comparison.
(yes we have to buy eggs to eat LOL)

It is pretty darn big for a fart egg, but then these birds are pretty big...

Have a bit of flash wash, but the egg is a creamy tan, a bit darker than a rock, and has dark brown speckles...hmmmmmm...so any guesses where the spots came from ?
Wyandotte background ?
It is so hard to 'see' any wyandotte blood in these birds.

OK, here ya go, and no guaranty that these people still raise the breed, but should be pretty current...

OK, good luck!! Hope I did not do too many typos..

I have no idea if they are LF or bantam..I have heard of a few of these people before, if you have the ALBC magazine of breeders you can look them up and see what they raise..most of these folks have alot of heritage birds, swine & horses, & cattle, etc.

There is a US Brabanter club on Yahoo. They split off of the UK Brabanter club. I'm wondering about genetic drift. Even if all the birds in the US came from a single small group of birds, over time, the individual flocks would drift apart genetically. I am getting my eggs from a couple of different sources in hopes of getting some genetic diversity.
