Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

One hen was broody for 2 weeks before we could get her eggs. She lasted until day 19 when I came home to cold eggs. Gave the eggs (candled and threw out 2 eggs) to the broody #2 who took to them like bees to honey. Broody #1 apparently still wanted to be broody so both are hatching eggs. 4 have hatched but I could not prevent 1 from getting in with the other chickens so one died. Three dry babies that I know of. They were dry when I saw them for the first time. One with furry legs!
I think its good when two hens bring them up together like myne did, it makes me feel safer latting them run off into the feild...

Yes, but the 'cravat' is that there is a duck egg there that I would like one of the chickens to try to hatch.. only one week longer! :) Ha! We'll see what happens! I am in heaven.. so excited!

Congrats! :D, im soo happy my hens braught their two up together, i felt safer about leaving them in the feild when they were little, but Melow just comes and goes now, and the orpington is a full time mum still.

all my hens are okay and my roos it was a falcon though kinda weird it wasn't that big and all i saw was from behind and it was grayish color but i guess my big red hen was to heavy for it to lift lol because it ripped feathers out of the hen thats it

Day 18 and I'm thinking if they have anything to hatch it may happen soon. Smokey keeps quietly clucking in the nest. They both look ready to be done sitting.

Went to check on the chickens today and a little bird suddenly flew out of the coop. It was so odd to see a wild bird fly out from inside, especially since the roosters were both sitting inside the coop on the roost. Weird.
