I hope the little one makes it out - sounds like you have done a great job trying to help.
Thank you, I spent a rather sleepless night over tha little duckling, wondering if i should have just left it alone, did I do too much, well went out this morning at firt light and it is struggling like the dickens to get free almost there now. It will get the rest of the way out on it's own. Thank God it's still living. Most of ya'll can relate to just what i have been going through I feel as though I hatched it LOL.

I have to say mama duck {Alice May} has been the best she hasn't pinched me once, I almost felt like she knew I was trying to help/ If it had been Emmie or Ruthie I would probably have had to go to the emergency room for stitches. By the way Alice May will be 8 years old in July and this is her first duckling.

that is great news! congrats.
Thanks stony, I took the other 2 eggs out from under Alice and candled them both were growing so I slipped the 2 eggs out from under Faith and gave her Alices last 2 eggs since they are way behind the duckling that just hatched. Then I candled Faiths eggs, nothing. Not that we need alot of ducklings but something isn't right here. Just hope this newest one will be okay after a day of rest. boy does it deserve it.

We had 4 baby Blue and Black Swedish ducklings hatch 2 days ago under our Ameracauna hen... the duck moms are good sitters but not great mamas...(they hatched 2 babies last month and both got tramped and died.) So far, the chicken mama is being great with them! We're watching closely so if any other chickens get mean with them, we'll put them in our brooder box...
here they were last evening...

Aww I love it, Congrats!!

Miss Lydia -- Congratulations on the duckling! I felt the same way every time the ducks or geese were hatching anything. Sigh. I did a batch of chicks in an incubator a couple years ago, and I was a wreck. Haven't had the energy to start up the incubator again, but maybe, next spring I'll try some chicken eggs again . . . I much prefer the birds taking care of the babies though.

Let my momma duck out for a few ours in the new goose free zone I made for her and the other broody ducks. She jumped right into the pool and took a bath --luckily it was too high for the babies. She got out right away, but she was much much happier. She dealt with the other ducks who wanted to mess with those babies, so I think I'll just keep letting her out for breaks every day, and when the babies are bigger I can just leave it open. She did bring them right back to the house at the evening . . . AND I took away her eggs -- stinky . . .

I hope your other duck will hatch out those two eggs so your duckling can have company. I still feel sorry for my lone duckling . . . going to be interesting getting her accepted by the flock . . .
