Old fashioned Broody Thread for Ducks

I have 2 Bantamn Overberg ducks setting runner and Ductch Hookbill eggs 3 or 4 each and my bantamn silkie ducks seem to want to set so I put some runner, and hookbill eggs in there too. The Overberg hatched 2 runners before and 6 of her own last year.So she knows what she is doing. I will have to move the drakes ,(where I 'm not sure yet)

, and take pools out....had the runner babies die at night in pool even though I lowered water and put rocks in , also didn't take drake out ,so won't do that again.

Looked it! That is such a cute shot of him with the duckling! so you have a large run they are altogether?

Here are twos recent pics(this week).. I have them penned for now because I am unsure how the drakes will be with it.. My oldest I know is A-OK just the two younger

Gotta watch them drakes, My oldest could care less but the younger one will nip them if they get in his space. What a sweet pic .

They have a huge area that is fenced off from the rest of the property, but around 9-10 am I open the gates and they can go out and forage but mainly stay pretty close to the house, we are surrounded by woods. Everyone is all together outside though. If you could have seen us this morning when Ruthie brought it out for the first time you would have probably been rolling on the ground laughing at us, the duckling takes off following the other ducks who are trying to get out of mama ducks way, and here goes Mama chasing baby Papa goose after mama and me bringing up the rear. I was a nervous wreck, I have another duck sitting on eggs in the house where mama and baby are and mama was nervous so i put a towel over Alices bedroom so Ruth would calm down. Now they are resting in their bedroom and I hope she'll want to stay put till heat of day is over and hopefully all blk snakes are in for the night. We have had some big ones coming around and they make me nervous when we have tiny ones just hatched .Aww I hope you have a girl, thats what i am hoping for also. 2 drakes and a gander are enough

How exciting please post some pics when they hatch. Thats me i really don't have anywhere to put my drakes except outside of the fence and don't want to close them off from the safety of the rest. But they really have done great with the ducklings. I had a chick drown earlier this spring so i am very cautious about water and babies.

HOLY HECK that scared me looking at the pic of the baby with that honkin' huge white goose! What a sweet picture, though - LOVED IT! Your momma 'Scovie is just beautiful!!

He is so gentle with these ducklings, I am so hoping to get him a mate this summer. I have a friend who is hatching Toulouse and even though Sammy is Embden It won't matter to him. Me either. I look on Craigslist all the time and there just aren't geese around here for sale.

We ended up making an addition on the barn and created 3 stalls for the drakes that way they are not bothering the hens or each other.. the two youngest are twerp's they look so pulled apart it's because they fight now & again but then the dust settles and they happily go about together!

I want to re-home at least one but it's hard, they are good drakes.. not nasty to people and forage well, so i want them going to a home not a dinner plate.

I admit to being somewhat nervous what we will end up but it seemed so silly to go buy birds when clearly i had hens more than willing(&capable) of making us some lol I just hope this doesn't bite me in the end.

Oh please post some pics of your ducks, i love Hookbills and I don't know if i have ever seen any Overberg ducks.

well, i may loose what is left of my marbles... it's day 37 and nothing has hatched under.. what was Lilly's nest that Lilac has taken over...(lost ya yet? ) She is still sitting and seems plenty dedicated but ??

I'll give it another couple days, perhaps i'll enlist some help and have to check them out tonight(eggs i mean)

Hey there all!

First time chicken/duck keeper here and hopefully an expecting grandma/mama of sorts. I have 3 broody birds! One chicken and TWO Khakis and I don't know what to do. About 98.9% of the time my two broody ducks are sitting on ONE nest (of about 20 eggs! Gah!) the rest of the time there is just one, is this really bad? I have heard a lot of contradicting things about letting birds go broody in the same place as other birds. Some say that other birds wouldn't even dare go near a mama's babes for fear of her wrath - where as others say its dangerous and the babes could be killed. Any ideas here?

I also hear khakis rarely go broody and usually get bored half way through (it's been about 2 weeks now) and they're impossible to move once they've made a nest. So I don't think separating them from the others / each other is possible at this point.. Any help? Thoughts? Comments/questions?

I was thinking of making three small pens and once the babes hatch separating them into those.. Not sure though..

(If you have time for a story - This girl was sitting on the eggs with one of the ducks originally. First it was one duck then it was two then it was a duck and my girl here and then she decided she wanted a nest of her own and is now sitting a few nest boxes down quite contently and the duck nest is back to two ducks.

No idea what to even think about this!)
