OMG!!! Duck born without eyes! ***UPDATE!! 11/01 with pics***

I am so glad to hear that Stevie is doing so well! She has grown into a pretty adult pekin! It's so wonderful to hear when these disability stories end up with such happy endings. I'm sure she's living a great life despite her visual issues, and it's awesome that she gets around just fine.

It's wonderful that you decided not to cull her and to let her grow and live with you. Kudos to you!

Really? That's what you got out of this thread? Besides, it's illegal to cull your husband!

This is a wonderful success story!

excactly, even though they have no eyes, they are helpless! if he gets older and breeds, he can probably get one-eyed babies!

I am sorry to tell you this, but you really need to put this animal out of it's misery. A life without eyes is will be very hard on this little girl or guy. And for the person above a few, Humans and animals are different. I believe in animal welfare not animal rights. And the without eyes this animals welfare is not good.

But its welfare is good according to our update. Personally I have a couple blind chickens and I would never dream of culling them. I agree with you to some extent that the animal's life will be VERY difficult, however, it will adapt. If you had a blind dog, would you kill it? Rhetorical question, needs no answer.

To OP- I just read this thread and I'm so glad that Stevie's doing great! IMHO, you made the right choice

Obviously you did not read the whold thread about Stevie and do not understand the situation. Stevie lives as any other normal duck does and there is not way I am "putting her out of her misery" She also is not missing her eyes, if you had read the thread you would have known that. As she has matured she has gained some sight in her better eye and finds food and water and gets around fine.

I am also believe in animal welfare and she has great quality of life. If you had read my original post you would have seen that I kept the option of culling her open. Please keep ignorant comments to yourself if you do not know the whole situation.

Didn't get in on this in the beginning, but am caught up now... GREAT job! Thank you for taking this hard job on and doing a wonderful thing! Stevie looks like she has a great life and is well loved. The coon attack was not a good thing and yet you made it into a good thing by bringing them together at the time... making lemonade out of lemons. Keep up the good work!

I'm currently doctoring a handicapped guinea for a friend. It has bad leg issues still, but it eating and getting around fine. We've still got a way to go with the little fellow.

I dunno. Looks like a pretty happy duck to me...Swimming around, living with her duckie family, plenty to eat and a bunny to hang with. By what definition is that "misery"???
