OMG..I THINK WE FOUND A GRAVE IN OUR BACKYARD! "UPDATE PAGE 11"

call me morbid.. but I love to walk thru old cemeteries ... even if I don't know anyone burried there... my hubby thinks I am nuts

doesn't creep me out at all, but then again I live in a funeral home. With out seeing the marker I wouldn't know but what you found sounds like an old property marker. We have them all around here they used to be used for surveying properties. Like another poster said it's the living you have to worry about

We found a headstone laying under a tree in our pasture, gov't issue type for a civil war veteran. Researched and found out he is buried in the town cemetary. We left the stone where it is.

Hubby and I love going thru cemetaries and learn about the people that was laid to rest. Many of them I found, died very, very young. And a few died at childbirth. Plenty of soldiers that died in Rev War, Civil War and WWI. Even the rich and well to do folks have their own mansoleums in good taste. Even the Powers' family enjoyed their rest in Greenwood Cemetary.

Do the bodies rot after sitting above ground in their own stone vaults? Funny I dont smell anything funky when looking in from the gated doors.

decomposition occurs no matter where the body is above ground or below. Many modern caskets are 'sealers' so the odor would be sealed in with the body. But if the person is buried in a wood or non-sealer you could smell the decomposition but in my opinion it would be not as strong because of the surrounding stone. After a while they stop stinking.

I pity the people that messed with that area. Indian burial grounds are sacred and should not be tampered with - too much bad Karma if you mess where you shouldn't...

Supposedly where we live is where Sherman's troops passed through and camped out in the backyard. There are alot of old cemetary around here and they date back along time ago. Pretty interesting stuff! I trail ride and we find old homesteads and cemetary back in the national forest.

Mrs. Glassman :

I would feel honored to take care of such property!

I don't believe in ghosts, because although I want to very much badly, I have never seen one.

I would take care of the area, and honor it, not be made afraid by it.

You may be the only person alive to know they are there, and we only live on through the memories of others.

Blessed Be.

This is a lovely way to think about it: you've been bestowed with the honor of taking care of a previous generation's loved one, whose name and memory has been lost to time. Honor that person's memory, even if you only know the date, as you would hope that a future generation will take care of you and yours.

Where I live, is supposed to be where the Brotherton Indian Reservation used to be. Our development is called "Brotherton Acres". We haven't found any graves yet, but my DH's friend who has a farm down the road has.
