If that was one of my kids screaming they would have made a trip to the bathroom end of story. I Have rescued animals now due to people getting a puppy then having a baby and then decided that they can't handle a puppy and a baby you knew you were having a baby months before. I just wish people would stop and think for a minute before they did something.

The lady at our TSC told us that they were told not to feed them for 6 hrs after they arrive and to not water them for 2 hrs after they arrive. Then told us we should do the same. When I asked why she told us that if we feed or watered them to early that they would all die of bloat. What?????

You have to be kidding me. I made sure to let them know that is the dumbest thing that I ever heard. Shortly after that they came out and gave those poor things some water and food.

Confession time.

I was one of those stupid people, about 15 years ago. As a dumb suburbanite I brought home two chicks for Easter. Kept them in a laundry basket in the bedroom. Moved them to a dog cage on the back porch. Finally put up dog kennels in the back yard to hold the two young roosters.

Those two roosters terrorized me every day as I fed them birdseed and gave them water in a dog bowl. They lived through storms, freezes, and predators. One died when he was 9. the other lived to be 11.

Last year, as I was researching goats for my farm, I stumbled across BYC. The content was so good I realized that chickens were a much better fit for my needs than a goat. I read everything I could find here, built a coop, and bought a flock at point of lay.

Now a year later, I have fresh eggs, a docile rooster, and an incubator under construction.

Maybe I was more ignorant than stupid.

In any case, BYC and the community here made my life and the lives of my chickens much better.

Buckle up people...Easters just around the corner. There'll be la lot of impulse buying in the near future.

When I am the President-Big Boss-Queen of the World, feed stores will have a "Wait a Day" purchase policy. Put your name on our list or call ahead to reserve, then come pick up your chicks with our complimentary (hopefully unnecessary) care sheet and supply list. This would cut down the impulse and temper taming buying of living things. The stores have assumed temporary responsibility for a living, breathing creature. They then pass that responsibility on to others. I would hope they would take that responsibility seriously.

I don't know. When I reflect on what I've read about the lives of battery-raised hens, and of male chicks stuffed into plastic bags and allows to suffocate, maybe chicks are better off in the hands of idiots than "professionals." At least they won't have their beaks cut off and have some semblance of a life.

Of course, the really lucky ones end up in the hands of an obsessive chicken hobbyist, but they can't all win the lottery.

You can't fix stupid, but you can take a stand against it taking root in your community. I applaud the OP for doing just that. I hope that you get a couple of free birds for your efforts, cuz you KNOW they will be rehomed when they are no longer cute.

In my TSC (Glenmont) there is someone standing there assisting with boxing the chicks and ducklings....however she is a bit wimpy and will still let people handle them in the store.

I worked with children for 20+ years and for every stupid parent there is one doing the best they know how for their children. I was in TSC talking to wimpy employee about when new chicks would come in and if she had any idea what breed. A woman rolled her stroller up to the tanks and was trying to lift her 40+ pound, disabled son up to see the chicks. I waited a bit and when the employee didn't offer to help the mom, I asked if I could pick up one of the chicks so the boy could see it. (she said "yeah, sure") I picked up the chick, told the boy and his mom how to pet the top of the chick's head....wow did he smile at the fuzzy little thing. The mom held his finger so if he spasmed he wouldn't hurt the chick. I couldn't resist picking up a duckling (with permission) so he could see the beak and touch another fuzzy head. The mom said "thank you". His smile was all the thanks I needed.

She didn't buy any chicks or ducks, she had her hands full just raising her son.

But even with an employee posted to "help" it doesn't stop people from touching the birds. I did it. LOL Then I used the hand sanitizer provided by the store to keep from spreading germs to everything in the store I touched on the way out.

I have a relative who fits into the stupid person category. My favorite was when I went to her house and she showed me the new puppy her children were playing with. It was a cute shepard mutt that looked to be about 8 weeks old and she asked me if I wanted it. My response was NO and why since you just brought it home. She had no intention on keeping the puppy, it was a freebee she picked up at wal-mart. I rolled my eyes and kept my opinion to myself - but I think my facial expression said it all.

And Yes Easter is right around the corner...
