Omg!! Such Stupid People One Meets!!

The local store that sells almost everything farm related is selling chicks this year. Maybe I'll go hang out there and try to educate people.

It always makes me feel ill when I think about the poor chicks being raised by well meaning but ignorant people.

I have become the chick hatcher at our fair. Last year was my first year and I hatched all week, then sold them on the last day. Most were mixed breeds from mine and neighbor's flocks. I was selling for a dollar a chick. There were mostly people who were watching all week and waiting so they could get 10 or so. They had their space ready and were excited ahead of time. However, there was a group of people who came through the petting barn at that time and their 3-year old wanted a chick. I did the same as you and tried to not sell them any. They just wanted one. I knew what was going to happen. It was about 90-degrees out and sunny. They were there to go on rides and walk around. Sure enough, they took one little chick and I knew it would be dead in a matter of about 20-minutes or less. I felt sick doing it, but when you have a crowd of 10 very large people staring you down for one chick, it is a bit intimidating. I am working on a strategy to deal with this next time around.

Perhaps it's not their fault they're stupid, but we can still hate them for it. They should totally have signs designating them as terminally stupid.

And you are totally allowed to be mad at your husband. You don't even have to have a reason. Don't you know The Rules? I'm going to have to dig those up and post them.

Did you know everything there is to know about chickens before you got some?????
I am a born learner. I love to learn anything and everything. I spent hours learning about raising chickens before I got some....but I did NOT know everything, nor does anyone on this website. I lost a chicken this winter even after hours of trying to figure out what was wrong. No one knows everything, but God. If people on this site ask a "stupid" question, or act "stupid", it's because they don't know everything and they are learning. Give people a break from the judgement.

I am certain that the comment was not directed at you. But can you honestly say that you haven't seen some truly inane problems posed--ones that even the most modest attempts at reading a book or doing a web search (aka doing your homework!) would have prevented?

You sound like someone who read the poultry section of a good book--TWICE--before you got chickens. And true, there's nuances that even the best author will leave out--it's all that unknown unknowns, known unknowns, unknown knowns thing...

There are some people who are just not temperamentally suited to have chickens, or kids, or dogs. Don't take it personally--I didn't!

And I'm lookin' forward to seeing the rules, Knittycat!

Unfortunately you don't have to have a brain or common sense to have kids either. Some people really should not have either kids or pets! Good for you trying to educate her ... I think especially now because of Easter coming up there will be lots of this going on - poor chicks and bunnies!

Here are the rules (pardon the caps, I cut and pasted from an e-mail) (also, this is HUMOR people.)

1. THE FEMALE ALWAYS MAKES THE RULES.
2.NO MALE CAN POSSIBLE KNOW ALL THE RULES.
3.THE RULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE AT ANY TIME WITHOUT NOTIFICATION.
4. IF THE FEMALE SUSPECTS THE MALE KNOWS ALL THE RULES, SHE MUST IMMEDIATELY CHANGE SOME OR ALL OF THE RULES.
5.THE FEMALE IS NEVER WRONG.
6.IF THE FEMALE IS WRONG, IT IS BECAUSE OF A FLAGANT MISUNDERSTANDING WHICH WAS A DIRECT RESULT OF SOMETHING THE MALE DID OR SAID.
7.IF RULE 6 APPLIES, THE MALE MUST APPOLOGIZE IMMEDIATELY
FOR CAUSING THE MISUNDERSTANDING.
8.THE FEMALE CAN CHANGE HER MIND AT ANY GIVEN POINT IN TIME.
9.THE MALE MUST NEVER CHANGE HIS MIND WITHOUT WRITTEN
CONSENT FROM THE FEMALE.
10.THE FEMALE HAS EVERY RIGHT TO BE ANGRY OR UPSET AT ANY
TIME.
11.THE MALE MUST REMAIN CALM AT ALL TIMES, UNLESS THE FEMALE WANTS HIM TO BE ANGRY OR UPSET.
12.THE FEMALE MUST, UNDER NO CIRCUNSTANCES, LET THE MALE
KNOW WHETHER OR NOT SHE WANTS HIM TO BE ANGRY OR UPSET.
13.IF THE FEMALE HAS PMS, ALL RULES ARE NULL AND VOID.
14.WHEN A FEMALE WANTS YOUR OPINION, SHE GIVES IT TO YOU WITHOUT QUESTION.

LOL! I'm like you, I read every site I could get to, and three books on chickens (now on my 4th) before I even got our coop and then the chickens. Now I'm incubating my first eggs ... hopefully they will do well! I just started with chickens last month, and thought it would take years to be brave enough to try incubating - only took a few weeks! Still, I have questions too.

Still, there are some people who shouldn't have pets, or kids ... I have a neighbor like that. Doesn't watch kid, can't find her half the time when they notice nobody knows where she is (has been going on since kid was 4), surprised kid has survived this long with stuff I hear - she was on their roof the other day, and I had to call to let them know. Let her keep a lizard she caught, but didn't bother to research how to take care of it, so it starved to death

I don't think the mom even tried to feed it. I told the girl what to feed it, and the mom too, don't think the mom cared since she never went to get crickets or worms for it. The next lizard she caught, I guilt tripped her into letting go, since it would just die too.

THANK YOU, Knitty!

I'm printing a copy in big bold letters, putting it in a protective plastic sheet, and handing it to my husband when he gets back from his business trip.

It helps to start things off on the right foot when they come back home.
