Regardless of who's toes you need to be careful of, I agree, she needs a vet. I understand that it can be mega money, been there. But at least to find out what you are dealing with, maybe it is something you can treat yourself by buying the meds elsewhere.

I am going to treat her for a few days at home with the polysporin and the daily baths and medicated water...and if there is no improvement I will cull her.

I am sorry I am not spending a $95 consultation fee for a chicken that cost me $7.50 ...

My own vet did look at a scraping and said he could not see anything that would make him think a mange or mite like infestation. He is showing it to a few vet friends over the next week and he said if he has any news he would call me... he said to continue treating as I have been. He did say he could not see the chicken in his office though...

more chunks of scabs came off tonight..

will I ever get all the polysporin out of her feathers?

I am thinking I will have a naked bird before i am done but still no signs of mites or anything, just scabs

Yeah, I have seen a heavy infestation of mites do real damage to the point where the skin flakes off or even comes off with the feathers.

I'm sorry, but I didn't pay anything for my dog, that doesn't mean I won't spend money at the vet for her, if I can. I guess I feel all my pets deserve the same treatment and care. Please don't take offense. I realize that many people don't feel the need to spend as much money on there chickens as they do their other pets. I guess I just get tired of seeing so many people on here talk about how much they "love" their chickens, but as soon as they need to spend money on them, it's not worth it. Just my 2 cents

well you know...a $100 vet bill is pretty expensive and half the time you leave and still haven't found out whats wrong...just cause someone doesn't want to take their chicken to the vet doesn't mean they don't want to spend the money...some people may not have the money to spend...especially in today's economy...just my 2 cents

You can still love a chicken and be not willing to spend a bunch of money. In fact I think anyone who would spend big bucks to save a chicken or even a dog is crazy. I guess since you love your dog you would probably take out a loan even if it the treatment was for $20,000. Am I right?... since you love him? If not why? You love him right? Oh your are now thinking about putting him down to end his suffering!!!! Everyone has their limits on the amount they can spend, doesn't mean they love their animal any less than the next guy. Just want to add...my Vets crack jokes about the "crazy ones" that make them $$$$.​

I realize that. Not once did she mention that she couldn't afford it, though.( I can completely understand, and relate to, not having the $$ everytime one of my pets need to see the vet, that's why I stated, "if I can"). She just stated that she was not GOING to spend $95.00 on a $7.50 chicken. To me, that sounds like it is not worth it to her to spend that much money on the chicken. Her chicken, her choice. She came to this forum looking for advice, and that was mine. Again, I don't mean to offend. Times are tight for many of us right now, including me and my family. But for me, I get peace of mind knowing that I did what I was able to, to keep my pets healthy and happy, not to mention keeping the rest of the flock safe from possibly becoming infected from the sick one.

Sounds to me like Dar is on the right track and caught this in time so "GOOD JOB!" I have a favorite black hen who lays blue eggs and I made the mistake of placing a pretty and young 1/2 banty 1/2 GLW roo in that flock. He decided she was his favorite and he wore all the feathers off her back, not to the point of breaks in the skin but to me it was bad enough without feathers and her apron would not stay on with him on her all the time- he had plenty other hens but I think those other hens were too big and mature to put up w/him. I chopped his head with regret but had no where and no sense in having a lonely roo. She's now in the same flock with a young BO roo (my Brewster's son) who is very kind to all the hens and she's growing feathers back

Dar, good job, I think you will be (and your lil EE hen, poor girl) rewarded for your efforts and one of those rewards is that she will not forget you cared enough to help her and protect her, let her rest on your lap...she will come running to you when she is once again a beautiful lady
