As someone who has spent thousands on my furry pets (we now have pet insurance) its not only the money that's a concern with chickens--its trying to find a qualified veterinarian who is familiar enough with poultry medicine to actually treat them. I don't propose spending a fortune on a chicken but that is a personal decision often based on family finances. I feel that if the owner is not allowing the bird to unduly suffer and protects them from predators (the only way a predator can get to our hens is with a chainsaw) and doing all they can is often a humane choice.

My husband however fears I will buy the girls spectacles and electric scooters for when they get too old to see little bugs or make it up their chicken ladder to the henhouse.

Are you happy with the pet insurance? I have that care package from Banfield which is more for preventative maitenance. I should have pet insurance with all I spend on my furries and bunnies and house birds. If I had indesposable income, I would also use it on my chickens. I have been fortunate with this site however with finding cures and remedies and I think Dar is doing everything within her relm for this chicken. I hope the best for them both, as I must admit i dont think I would have gone much beyond the second bath and called it a lost cause after that. She is great for doing what she is doing!

I dont think that i would ever vet my chickens... maybe if it was a "special" one or something... most likely not though.
Sorry if that makes me a bad person in your eyes or anyones elses... (i'm not much into caring about peoples opinions of me anyways..)
I would most def vet my geese though... (i know..sounds unfair..but it is what it is...)
I also have to say..Even though i would not vet most of my chickens, i would never let them suffer. They would be put down here at home by us as quickly and painlessly as possible.

I understand there are no vets here that would even treat a chicken. We have a chicken now that we are going to euthanize tomorrow and not for lack of trying to fix and treat we have been for a few weeks. However since there is no vet to help and she is suffering we made the decision that its time to let her go. It was not an easy decision for us but one that we made. Yes I could dump a bunch of money into antibiotics and maybe give her some more time but would that be fair to her. I don't think it would. I think Dar has done a wonderful job with her hen and I am so glad to hear that the hen is healing. I don't think anyone should be upset if one person wants to spend a bunch on their animals and another does on the dog but not the chickens it is each person's own beliefs that decides that. So to each their own. We all must do what feels right t us. Sorry dar did not mean to high jack your thread. Just needed to say great job on the hen and can't wait to see the new pictures.

Yes, I also agree to each his own, and I do what I can with what I have and if I could afford to do more, I would. I feel if the bird has been good to me, provided me with eggs and insect control, then I can at least treat within my means. I also know that if I had a pet that lived in my home, I would pay what I could to make it well, as much as I do routine vet care. Mention was made earlir by someone that they would not pay anything for an animals care, that is why I said if people feel that way, then dont have a pet. Pets dont ask to be owned. And the other point I tried to make is that some people will neglect the care of a hen in the condition that Dar's is in, yet if a predator got that hen, even while it was sick, those same people would be attacking the predator.

ETA spelling corrections!

So far we've gotten back more than we put in. It costs us $50 per month for our 2 dogs. We haven't insured the cats but have spent plenty on them too (radioisotope treatment for hyperthyroidism on one) as the premiums would be too high as they are not spring chickens (a pun!). We have Pets Health Care Plan and can go to any vet we choose (great for seeing a specialist). We pay the hospital up front and get money back from the insurance company. There is a $100 annual deductible per pet and they pay about 80% after that.

We are lucky to have not one, but two veterinarians experienced treating chickens less than a half hours drive from us.

Here is the updated pics...

this is after 7 days of bathing everyday, polysporin everyday, and dettol (which is an antiseptic wash, I could not find betadine)

I am washing off bigger and bigger chunks of that crusty looking stuff every day but there is still a lot. I did not do the polysporin today I am going to let it really dry out. The poly keeps it moist. I may switch to something else to see if that has a better affect on the wounds.

Dar, I just found this post & have not read all replies - sorry for that, but I'm leaving shortly & I wanted to mention that this looks fungal to me. If you haven't found evidence of mites/lice, I would strongly suspect it's a fungal issue. If you think it may be, and if you have not yet tried this, it's time consuming but it works wonders on fungal and is not hard on their skin. Get some Hibiclens from the human drug store; put in a spray bottle. Wash her, dry her (air dry or blow dry) and spray with Hibiclens. Let it set on her skin for 10 mins., then rinse off. Let her dry, and then spray on a dilution of Virkon(s). I believe you can only get this online, but I'm not sure on that. Get the tablet form of it, it's MUCH less expensive that way - one tablet mixes with 16 ozs. water. Spray her with the Virkon, let air dry. THen, spray her every 6-8 hours with the Virkon for an additional 2 days, then repeat the entire process again. GOOD LUCK!
