Wild Oil of Oregano is a good natural anti-fungal. You cen add a few drops to her water to help boost her immune system and heal from the inside out. I had a some chicks that had lung issues and a few drops of it in their water and all issues were gone the next day.

This is what I used...

Antibacterial, Antiviral, Antifungal & Antiparasitic
First and foremost, Oil of Oregano is a powerful Antimicrobial. Numerous scientific studies and human experience have confirmed its ability to destroy all types of "germs" causing infection - Viruses, Bacteria, Fungi and Parasites. When you consider how many health conditions are caused by these pathogenic microorganisms, it becomes apparent why Oil of Oregano is such a useful remedy. In vitro studies have proven Oregano essential oil to be as effective as leading prescription antibiotics against bacteria. Yet unlike these toxic drugs, Oil of Oregano is safe for internal use and does not allow for the development of resistant germs (a.k.a. "super bugs").

But here is a bunch from a google search.

You have done a great job with you chicken. keep up the great work!

DAR,

Sorry bout the bird, I would look at several issues, to be a detective is what you must do.
1. where was bird living, inside, outside? free range?

All of the above... I got her from a friend who has pristine conditions... I quarantined anyway. She was in quarantine for 30 days. My quarantine pen is inside and no where near another bird. She was in my out door coop for about 2 weeks when I noticed she was not running with the rest of the flock. (see pics on first post) this is what I found. This was not present when she went to the big coop. My chickens have a huge coop 20 X 20 with 18 birds being housed in there. I also have an out door pen/run that is 16 X 25. and finally they are free ranged from about 4 pm till dusk (about 9pm)

2. That smell, Dead flesh, it is constant or just when wet?

She no longer smells. But it was when she was dry. The smell went away after a few baths in Dettol

3. Areas of skin without feathers, being pecked on can be a secondary issue Ill birds or birds with mites, skin lesions, mange etc....

It is not mange, I brought a skin scraping to my vet and he looked for parasites and mange, he did not see anything but like he said he has NO experience with poultry so he is in the dark. The feathers have been falling out as the chunks of flesh have been coming off with the daily baths

I would look at several things, just for starters,
1. plenty of clean water dehydrated or dirty waterers can cause other illnesses and allow a weakened bird (animal) to be vulnerable to disease that normally would not affect it.

Waterer is changed daily 5gal plastic waterer for 18 birds plenty there ... it is disinfected weekly with bleach. If I find any algae mid week I will disinfect mid week

2. After cleaning and debreing the wound sites, a slight scrubbing with a soft tooth brush to remove all necrotic tissue, on large areas I use a squirt bottle of hydrogen peroxide, then flush the wound with water, let dry, and protect it from fly infestation, ( Hydrogen peroxide should not be used for wounds that are already healing, it eats the new tissue. BUT to clean and removed necrotic mess it is the best!

There is fresh skin there so I dont think its a good idea to use the peroxide. I have been lightly scrubbing and debreing daily but carefully not to disturb new tissue growth. The chicken is inside in a crate in my dining room so I am not to worried about a fly infestation

3. Spray open wounds with wound cote or some other anti biotic, spray, cream

I have been using a triple antibiotic ointment daily

4. Make a slight solution of a mite spray and mix with mineral oil (read baby oil) spray the skin liberally, let it soak deep into the skin,
most skin diseases often begin from a mite, scratch, tic etc... so mites, fleas and other parasites that live on the skin need to suffocate, the spray works wonders,
I have a mixture I use of a flea spray mixed with mineral oil. I also have on many occasion used WD 40. clears up the issue in a heart beat! Plus it stops the squeaking.

There are no mites present... I think this started with a pecking issue at her other house or during the integration to the new home (here) her previous owner said she was separated and put with the bantams because the bigger hens were picking on her. I think the stress of the new move stressed her enough to allow what ever this is to take hold

5. Sanitize the area, Dust with a liberal amount of D. E. I have even pressure washed the building with a solution of bleach, dust the ground with D.E.

there is no other chickens affected. I did however clean the coop and they ALWAYS have access to DE, I use it in everything.. I put it in their food, in the bedding on the roosts, in the nesting boxes

6. Keep the bird quiet, and comfy.

She is in a air conditioned house with lots of TLC.. I have also put her on a product called super booster.. Its like Gatorade but also has antibiotics in it

Look for infection in other birds, and follow a tight protocol so you dont contaminate the whole herd. you can also let the birds take a D. E. Dust bath. they love it.

there is NO signs of anything with my other birds I have been checking them daily

Good luck

Thank you your suggestions are great!

Dora'smom :

Just a comment on the tea tree oil issue. It is not toxic for animals. Many dog shampoos have a small amount of tea tree oil in them. As a matter of fact, I just ran out to the back porch to check some of my labels, and Rooster Booster Pick-no-More lotion (for use on birds) does have tea tree oil in it. Mind you, it is present in a very small percentage, and maybe that is the key---too much would be toxic. Just wanted to clarify that point. . .
