I understand what you are saying, but for me it wasn't just the chickens safety it was DD's. I also have a DD that's 2yr old. And I'm thankful she wasn't in the yard as well. I still don't know how the dog reacted around people that were not the owners. I SAW what it did to other animals. This is MY "MOMMY's" view. See what I mean??

OK!! I know who's MOM you are!!!

LOL Pat yourself on the back for having a smart, sweet, sensible child there!! Good job, and Happy Momma's Day to you too! And to all the MOTHERS out there! Don't worry dads your day's coming!

My DD's dog barks at box turtles, does that count?

yes, I do see. You are right, your daughter is the most important part of this whole thing, and I am SO glad she is OK. It's hard to believe it could have been worse, but it really could have. I am glad your husband reacted quickly, that dog would have probably made it's way back eventually, and who knows what it would have done once it had that taste. Oh, I wanted to add that we were also afraid of neighbor's retaliation. Our neighbors were quite unsavory, and we suspected they were, well, basically a crack house. They threatened us and our dog. We did end up putting a combination lock on the coop, maybe overkill, but it made us feel better.

I thought about locks too. Am still. Hoping for no further occurances of ANY kind! These neighbors are at the other end of the crack spectrum supposedly. Although by the sons foul mouth, (I didn't post all of his words) I doubt it! There's cussing and then there's worse. LOL And THANK YOU for your kind words!

Have you by any chance miss my avatar..?

My 3 dogs are the most important part of my family after me and my wife.. but still... I will be angry too if they went out, kill other people's pets and get shot....

not because they get shot, but because I fail to keep them contained.

lickskillet,

I'm very sorry for your family's loss... I absolutely think you did the right thing and admire your daughter's bravery.

I think what the owners and some on here arent realizing is that your daughter was hitting the dog over the head with a shovel and he stilll didnt stop killing... I love my dogs but if my dog didnt respond to someone hitting him over the head with a shovel... he deserves to be shot. The dog was out of control and could have easily turned on your daughter, and you guys . I hope you are all able to resolve this civily when some time goes by and they've had
time to think about it.

Just for the record.. I am a major dog lover... much more so than chickens but no I'm not siding with the dog lovers on this one.... not in these circumstances at all.

Take care,

Nancy

What your DD witnessed will stay with her for a long time.

I too came upon the scene of a dog ripping my favorite roos and hens to peices. They sound they made will be with me forever.

Chickens are innocent. They have feelings and thought. When a predator attacks they all know what is happening. The fear in their voices is somthing I do not intend to hear again.

There is nothing like picking up your favorite roo and hen off the ground in the aftermath of a dog massacure.

I chased the dog off as I did not have a weapon. I actually cried for quite some time. Not something I would do.

The really horrid thing about this is the dog was having a wonderful time. Believe me, if your DD had not acted the dog would have killed each and every one of your flock that it could get a mouth on. I am sure she knew this instictively.

This is why I tell you all that I WILL NOT hesitate to shoot a dog that attacks my livestock.

I have let many a dog pass through because they did not attack, but it only take one.

So very sorry for your loss.

I am considered a canine behaviour specialist by my peers. My specialty is aggression. I have to say I actually got a bit sick to my stomach when I read the first post because of fear for your daughter. Your brave girl is so lucky. A dog in that heightened state of aggression during a killing spree could have taken her down so easily and this could have been more tragic than it is. Your daughters little dog would have been prey to that shepherd as well and I'm glad it wasnt a victim as well.
I am a dog lover. Have made my living for 20 years working with really dangerous animals and I can tell you I would have shot that dog without hesitation. The suggestion that was made earlier that you should have grabbed it and restrained it would have precipitated an attack on you. I am absolutely sure of that. It was never an option.
Your husband was right to do as he did and no one in your family should harbor any regret for the dogs fate. Regardless of how the dog got loose its actions at the time of its death sealed its fate.
Your daughter has the heart of a lion to do what she did and im so very glad she is safe.

The dog was on a killing spree, and your child was there. You did the right thing, at any point it could've turned and gone for her instead. When a child is at risk, a parent should not hesitate, that's wired into us. While it is tragic for the neighbors, it could've been far more tragic if the dog had turned.
