Morning everyone, I went down to the coop and let out hte others and waited to see if by some chance maybe a straggler would show up, and DD is taking pics of the coops and run. I'll take pics of the bodies MYSELF for record. I don't know if said dog was vicious towards humans or not, having had no contact with it in the past. But if things were to happen again, we KNOW after talking that we would have done the same again. Hang on DD is hollering for me BRB. YEAH!!!! Her EE hen Tiffany is back! And PUMPKINPUP the "Rooroo" Marans juvenile roo is back! We thought one of the black juvi hens in the bag that we gathered up was him!! Those were the 1 of the 2 unaccounted for last night!! Now just to find the other 1...

Going down to sit with DD and hubby by the coop for awhile, be back soon.

I know right now you might not be thinking about filing charges or ways to get compensation from them, but honestly I think for your daughter's sake I would pursue it. It might give her a sense of an ending to this horrible occurrence and show her that standing up for herself is not a bad thing in life.

I'm surprised that BYC member horsejody has not posted yet on this thread. A little while ago she was posting about her legal battle with neighbors over their dogs that decimated her flock, and she became our resident squeaky wheel of not letting people slide by on things like this. You might want to PM her for help/tips/info on how to get information on getting compensation.

We have a daughter who put herself in harms way to save her pets. I would have done the same thing. Thinking of my pets and not myself. Thankfully she was not harmed.

Had the dog bitten her ~ I don't believe for one millisecond that the dog would have bitten her because it is a GS or because it was a vicious dog. The dog was after anything that was moving and could have (and thankfully it didn't) gone for her arms, legs, face, etc. At that moment I don't think the dog would have been able to rationalize the difference between a moving arm or a moving chicken. It's the nature of a dog. It had nothing to do with the breed of the dog but the size of the dog. Had it been a smaller breed dog...it might would have had a different outcome.

The owners of the dog ... I feel, had a normal reaction to the loss of their pet ~ who probably have never seen it act that way and can only remember their family member who wagged his tail, chased a ball, and slept with the kids at night. Had they been there in person to see what was happening at the time, they would probably have a better understanding of why the dog was shot.

We've seen everything from you killed my dog for no reason ~ it was just a chicken to these chickens were loved and named by a daughter to an irresponsible dog owner because the dog was loose and attacked the birds. (Which the OP has indicated that this dog did not appear to be a dog who was allowed to roam all the time stirring trouble).

The OP feels quilty because she let the chickens out for some fresh air from the rain and mud and are dead. That's normal. The dog owner probably feels guilty because their dog left their property and is dead. That's normal. Both side are feeling anger and hurt against themselves and against each other. That's normal.

Who knows what the outcome will be. Hopefully it will be handled in a civil manner. Right now, the important thing is to help the daughter get over this ~ maybe get her some new chicks. And most of all, to eliminate all this blame when we really don't know anything about the other family and their dog. Offer support to the OP and drop the labeling of dog owners and the breeds of dogs in every case of dog vs chicken.

Having been a Veterinary technician and a homeowner defending children from a stray collie….this was NOT Lassie....but ...an animal bent on going where it wanted and threatening the children on my front lawn.....

I can tell that some people have never been confronted with an angry, scared animal or one in the throes of a blood lust.

It is quite a daunting experience and I can truly state that you can actually feel your own hackles standing up on your arms and back.

These are NOT the hackles of bravery my dears….but that of the uncontrollable instinct of the flight or flight response. It is ages old and is an automatic response and if you do not wet yourself, you are doing well.

Only a dumb human being would be so stupid as to try to man-handle such an animal.

I am not sure where in Ky you are so please PM me I have and want to give Grace some of my Silkie chicks if she is interested at all in them they are about 5 weeks old I may be able to deliver or meet you depending on where you live. I think everything that can has been said I have been on both sides of this and there is no winner only losers my heart goes out to all involved please let me know if she would like these chicks

I have barely gotten started on this post but I have to admire your daughter for her quick thinking and fast acting. Not many children can think that quickly. You never get between a momma and her babies no matter who the momma is. I was and am much like your daughter, Iwould fight tooth and nail for the safety of all animals when Iwas young and even now.

The dog should have been secured, yes. And if it were my dog I would be very angry and upset but I also know that once I got my senses back I would realize it was a tragedy that could have been avoided if I the dog owner was more careful. One of my neighbors threatened to shoot one of my dogs and now she stays secured all the time. My other dog is a shepard mix and looks like a coyote. Some day she may get away and may get shot. That is a tragedy Idon't want to think about, but it may happen.

I hope your whole family can heal from this and be thankful for the joy the pets gave and look forward to having more come into your lives.
