Lol, THEY called the police on YOU?! Wow....I can't imagine what they expected as an outcome of that. And why wait 4 days after the incident (not that it mattered since they were in the wrong

)? I can't help but wonder if they got talking to someone who put the idea in their head call the Police. I would think that if it was their original idea, they would have called before now. Lol Ok now I am just typing as I think

. Sorry bout that. I am glad to hear that the police went over to tell those folks that they don't have a leg to stand on, and inform / warn them about the harrassment.

We lived out here in the country 2 1/2 years without a gun.... heh, I don't see how we did it! My hubby is teaching me to shoot, just in case I need to use the guns. Though I hope I never do! You should so take lessons! Ya never know when stuff might happen....in Feb. we lost our lil' goat to a coyote. Every loss hurts! I hope all goes well. Good luck to you guys and keep us posted.

This thread is actually good education for the "just in case" situations.

"DD had the grandparents buying her eggs, and grandparents coworkers. I hate to say this, but she sold just about all she got, and left us with enough for weekends. LOL She's a good girl, and I really considered this her first job. Making contacts, collecting eggs, washing them, marking them, selling them(making change) in her head, not that she charged alot. LOL But she'll build back up her flock, when she's ready. Now to just get oldest DD into comp. graphics somewhere! Lol, and can;t forget the 2yr old, but it'll be a few years yet. Thanks for asking!"

Don't forget the business loss lessons. Time to learn about business insurance? Not that she would need it but it will give her an idea of the sad side of owning your own business. Also of when to sue for losses and when to cut your losses and go, standing up to bullies , you get the idea

lots of prayers for your saftey and the return of peace.

Some jurisdictions do have a minimum limit, but I don't think you have to worry about that - it's usually really nominal like $25. I had originally stated that compensation might be real minimal - like $5/bird cause that's the going price in the supermarket... but I think I was wrong. Someone else pointed out that this is an egg business and that changes everything.

Seems to me what you can reasonably claim you're out is:
A. The cost of replacement chicks
B. The cost of feeding them till they start laying (20 weeks)
C. The lost egg production for that period of time

Or something like this as a ball park calculation.

New Chicks $46.75 ( 17@$2.75)
Feed - 20 weeks $170.00 (17@$10)
Lost egg production $233.75 (17*3*20/12*$2.75)
=======
Total $450.50

I'm sure you're numbers will vary, but I'm sure you get the gist.

Well, we already know these are irrational, selfish and crazy people. So, although I'm a bit amused and annoyed at the same time, I am not surprised. They were, and probably still are, stewing over the situation, hence the belated complaints to the sheriff's office.

Though, the reason why it doesn't surprise me at all is because I have neighbor's *just like them* in that they *really and honestly* don't think you have the right to kill another person's animal while they are on your property. You can show them the law black and white and they'll still argue. Their animals (all kinds of different animals) have been on our property in numbers anywhere from 2 to 15 (not exaggerating).

This includes predatory dogs in groups of anwhere between 3 and 6. Again, not exaggerating, and not exaggerating the neighbor's belief that they are well in their right to do so.

We have reports on file with the sheriff's office for when we shoot one of their dogs (which I know will happen eventually).

Honestly, I don't think these guys (both yours and mine) even have a definitiion for the word "ownership", as in, OWN UP TO YOUR FAILURES TO LIVE UP TO YOUR RESPONSIBILITES.

I honestly don't know where it comes from. But I'm soooo sorry you guys are having such an ordeal. I'll keep praying for your safety and your peace of mind.

Oh, and almost forgot. Since this is not a contract case, and considering the tragic way it occurred (young child witnessing/involved in it, having to personally shoot the dog, etc), you could also ask for compensation for emotional distress.

AND, if you could prove that this dog owner has a history of letting their dogs run loose and causing trouble, asking for punitive damages to be levied would not be a stretch (although that usually requires a significant negative history by the defendant).

Well, I'm sending extra prayers your way again tonight for you, your DD, and the 3 chickens that are still ill... I'm truley hoping they make it, ya'll have been through enough. I'm also gonna say an extra prayer that your DD will get her egg business up and going again, even better than before- though nothing can ever replace the girls she's lost. Y'all are special people and deserve to have peace of mind, so here's one more extra prayer that this all resolves very quickly.

OMG I go to work and come back to 10 pages to read?

Anywho, I couldn't begin to tell you how relieved I was when I read you had the PD on your doorstep. The fact that the officers confirmed what everyone else on here was saying and that whole part about them calling the PD on you is priceless. Really amusing to me. Kinda disheartening to know these guys are known to the officers for reasons OTHER than helping little old ladies cross the street, but hopefully the officers read them the riot act and informed them of the charges that could be filed against them if their behavior continues. I'm thinking that this may actually be a turning point for you and like Eggcellence said "IF they are at all rational, this should be the start of the end of denial and the start of healing for them so they can move on and leave you alone."
