Here is a sign to put by the neighbor's yard... No not really, but I figured for those of you out there with a horrible neighbor, you'll get a chuckle out of this

broken bones. She got off lucky! It could have been much worse. Thanks for bringing this up. The people who disagreed with how this was delt with can now see what happens from an unrelated incident. I hope they don't try to restrain a dog like this.

Lickskillit, I think your daughter is brave as well as smart. She used a shovel, and kept her flanges out of gnashing teeth.

YES! it could have gone much worse in both instances.
I am glad it didnt .
People need to understand a dog or any critter in kill mode is NOT about to be restrained by anything or anyone.

Well, that certainly hasn't been my experience.

How often have you worked with large aggressive dogs? I have my whole life. My advice, don't go after a dog in kill mode. Especially a GS, not just because they are large and strong, they are also one of the smartest dog breeds out there and have a sort of slyness that borders on human intelligence IMHO.

Thanks Boyd for the sign!!

Im4Eggcellence I have printed out your posts on the egg BUSINESS and such, thanks for taking the time to do that. That's great! I showed it DD and she put it on the fridge to look at and study, in case she wants to add anything! Thanks again!

And thank you everyone else for your well wishes, 99.9%!

With all due respect again, let me reiterate. We believe ourselves to be at the TOP of the food chain and that we are the smartest creatures on the earth. That may be. However, we are not the swiftest mentally nor physically. Compared to the rest of the animal world we are the softies.

DD was extremely fortunate to have confronted the dog in the manner that she did. I talk from experience. We humans only think we are fast. Swinging a bat at an animal is very slow and clumsy compared to an animal’s instinct to attack. This is no reflection on her or her character. She was caught off guard and it was her instinct to strike back. That is understandable.

The best one can do is to protect your face….and that is why so many people end up in the Emergency Room with lacerated arms and legs. We are just NOT built to react and confront an animal out of control. Those that survive unscathed are just plain lucky.

Well, I have (killing my chickens, in fact), and as I said, it has not been my experience that they cannot be controlled.

As I said earlier, I don't know what I would have done in the situation described in the OP. The daughter in harm's way is certainly a factor. I very well may have done the same.

But I also wouldn't kneejerk just kill someone else's dog as the first resort, as some here seem to suggest. The fact that many here are concerned for the safety of this family should be all you need as to why. Since some are using this thread as a template for their own reaction to similar situations, I only suggest they consider that.
