Where are you at in Ky. I want to make sure I don't have neighbors like yours. I also think you should ask your neighbors for compensation for the damage they have caused by not keeping their animals under control. My prayers are with you as you deal with your neighbors.

I just wanted to give my condolences. This situation must be difficult for everyone involved.
Sending relaxing & positive energy to you and your family...

In this area the threats are many, coons, possums, hawks, coyotes, stray dogs, NEIGHBORS dogs, snakes etc! That';s why we never let them out under normal conditions, but with the rain and all, just thought we were being humane... NOT!! Our neighborhood is on the outskirts of city limits, the houses are on 2 acre lots or more. BUT I'm sure she heard the gun shot or the kids did, the dog itself never made a sound. Other than that I don't know how they knew to come/stop here. Maybe they saw us all out with flashlights looking for the chickens that were left.

so sorry! I'm traumatized just reading this...
Things will work out; none of this was your fault and your neighbors should realize that.

How do you know how many places they looked before coming up their driveway. Maybe they rode up one or two other driveways before getting to her's.

It's also a little early to talk about pressing charges. It's also a little too early to talk about them taking them to small claims court.

This just took place a couple of hours ago.... we've seen irresponsible dog owners, nasty neighbors, small claims court, press charges, retaliation, the dog owner is to blame, the chicken owner is to blame. Jeez....

What is needed is a good 24 hour cool down and maybe they can talk it out. Then take it from there.

I'm not taking either side....just trying to be fair to both parties involved.

well sweetheart I'm glad you shot the dog to protect the flock I will be doing the same. if your neighbor gets red about it tell them I did it and send them to me. I will be more than happy to tell them what I think.

I hate that this happend to you. It is terrible to have something happen like that between neighbors, too.

I commend you for trying to be helpful even after their dog massacred your chickens. That was being "neighborly". They had to learn a very hard lesson today about pet ownership and responsibility. If money is a concern, then by all means get that certified letter charging for the birds ($10.00 minimum). However, if money is not an issue - and teaching them a lesson is - then IMO they've lost a lot already.

I hope your daughter feels better soon.

She was very brave dealing with that dog and I commend her for that... and Mom, it is great that you had a talk about assessing risk before jumping in up to your neck. Try to get some rest tonight.

Edited for spelling, thank you for pointing that out... it's late and it has definately not been my best day.
