Listen hear! We were not so worried about the CHICKENS but our DAUGHTER! There is THAT mindset!! As far as compensation, I could care less right now! My husband mentioned it, and I just threw it out there. I have a dog too, I know how they felt, but they didn;t/couldn't feel our side!

Her husband didn't MURDER her dog he was protecting his flock. Why was the neighbors dog on her property to start with.
Don't get me wrong if a dog comes on to my property looking for scraps, companionship or just to be nosy I greet them with open arms. If he is out to do damage to me, my family or my livestock I'll greet him with lead
I think what she did was the right thing to do no matter what her neighbor's oldest son think.
I'm still sorry for your loss.

Try and get a good nights rest....and maybe y'all can find something relaxing to do for Mother's Day tomorrow. I understand that this isn't all about the dog or chickens. The last thing you want to do is make this a big scene with the neighbor's when she is at an age that is critical. Especially when it come to other's people kids and how they react to her.

Let her know she is in my thoughts and hope that she can heal and put this behind her.

Everyone has a right to protect their property against intruders of ANY species.
Unless this is now against the law in certain areas of the USA.

Luckily the authorities were involved at the outset of the intrusion and KILLING of personal property. Costs of replacement are involved here at the very least.
The predator/burglar/home invader/etc (owner of) should be held accountable for all costs associated. In our State, that is the law. Also the home/property owner should not rely on law enforcement to collect any and all evidence but should document this while the authorities are there with PICTURES.

Wishing good luck to recovery of your lose. This is a life lesson for your dtr on how things really are in the real world. IMO, she is luck to have learned this at an early age. There are so very many out there that are so protected against life's inequalities that they will be unprepared against them as adults.

That worried me, about your daughter having to fend the dog off with a shovel. She could have been SERIOUSLY hurt. Now if this was say, a beagle or something, you might have been able to handle it differently, but being a German Shepherd, your husband did the right thing not taking any chances and shooting the dog. Yes--Chickens are replaceable (which, btw, you most certainly should insist on recompense for your losses), dogs are replaceable, but your daughter, or even your husband, is NOT.

Aside from your safety, state and local laws often allow for shooting a dog that is harrassing--much less killing--your livestock. Anyone who keeps livestock should be aware of their rights long before something like this ever happens.

As sad as it may be that your neighbors have lost their beloved pet, this is their fault entirely. Even if the dog slipped out accidentally only once in it's whole life, STILL their fault. Too many people don't take responsibility for their animals or their actions. What if the dog had bitten someone? They'd have a lot worse on their hands (and more of a monetary loss than just replacing the cost of 17 chickens).

I am soooo sorry that you had to deal with this...very traumatic and tragic!!

Your right GeNewChick let's remeber what is important to us. I get really wound up about this at times because I know what is right. You have put it back into perspective for me, thanks. God bless you. I'm leaving now, thanks for the conversation.

As sad as it is. I wouldn't make them pay. They lost as much as you did. I would think they paid enough with their dogs death. I don't want to sound mean. And I know they were rude. And yes i love my chickens. But I know if my neighbor shot my dog no matter the reason I would be upset. Of course I would be upset if my neighbors dog ate my favorite chickens. But still speaking as an animal lover. I could of never killed an animal. And even though it's hard to understand I'm sure the dog getting out was an accident, and they are just as upset or even more so to loose a friend.
