He saw a opposum in the back corner of our pole barn a few days ago, back where our sneaky hens had been laying. I say had been, because not many eggs there lately. They all lay at different times, or wait in line for a certain nest.

So anyway, there have only been 2 eggs in the pole barn, and I have only been getting 4 eggs vice 9 for the past few days. Well, I figured the girls were cold and light deprived, and the opposum had gotten an egg or two.

Well, told my sweet husband to go lock up the coop, we forgot to last night and the roos woke us up under the window this morning.

So he goes out with the LED light on his hat, we always count them because of our brain damaged blue polish roo. Many times DH has gone to find him after dark and put him in the coop. So he goes in, and THERE IS THE OPPOSUM! IN THE COOP!

He grabbed a Tpost and tried to poke him to run out of the coop, but he hid behind a board in there. DH goes back into the pole barn to get the pitch fork, and spied the spading fork. If you don't know what a spading fork is, think of a pitchfork with wide, short tines.

He goes back to the coop, and the dumb opposum is still there, standing on the 2x4 sill of the door that divides the coop into two parts. So my warrior hubby stabs him and pins him to the 2x4. Opposum doesn't move, so DH picks the fork up, and THEN he starts wiggling. DH pitches him out the coop door, and DH says 'he hit the ground running'.

Came in to tell me, and to get the 10 million candle power light to go look for him. Didn't find him, but either the buzzards or we will tomorrow. He is prolly dead in our hay field. Oh, joy.

But I am so proud of him, he has never had to do something like this before, and he stepped up to the plate and hit a home run.

We will be setting the HavAhart trap every night our cats are inside for a few weeks.

Good for your hubby!!!! About 2 months ago we had a possum here too but it was on our front deck bothering our cat, believe it or not my hubby too took a pitchfork to the possum...he killed it with that and it went right in the trash! Your hubby saved your chickens for sure!

They are ugly cusses, aren't they! I hate to kill an animal, but since we bought our farm I have gotten the mama gene, lol. My animals are now my life and fortune, woe to those who will affect my family.

Last week I let my dog out and he immediately started barking like crazy. So I followed him out to check and saw a possum peeking out of a hole he'd dug under my back porch. Got the live trap and set it down next to the hole. Meant to get something to bait it with, but forgot. When I went to lock up the chicken house that night, I thought, "Gotta bait that trap!" Went inside, answered the phone, got DGS something to drink, etc. etc. etc. Next morning, when I let the dog out, he started barking like day before. I looked outside, the stupid possum was sitting in the unbaited trap, hissing at the dog. DGS and I took a little road trip to the Corp of Engineer lake and when I got the door to the trap open, that possum hit the ditch running! Think he was very glad to get away from me and the crazy barking dog.

I went out a few weeks ago and my dog started huffing and puffing at the coop, i got a flash light and sure enough there was a opossum eating up my feed! I got my husband and he came out and just grabbed the thing by it's tail and flung it into the woods. I was so scared of the little thing and my hubby just laughed at me.

Saw a possum digging under my fence to get at my birds. DH put out some leg traps that day in the same spot we saw him and he came back and we trapped him. He is now history.

Word of warning here:

Sometimes when you dispatch a 'problem' possum, there is a nest of babies stashed somewhere close. (Disney had me thinking Mama possum toted them on her back until they got their own driver's license!

)

If they are old enough starvation will bring them out of the nest and you'll be seeing baby possums everywhere! Then you'll turn in to a big softy that can't stand to see them suffer and you'll be frantically trying to save them (Or so I hear).

Everything will be fine for the first 4 babies rescued and sent to rehab, but #5 will manage to escape the VERY SAME cage used for #s 1 -4 and give you 36 horrifying hours imagining a possum loose in your house! Then, thank God, you find it.
