A few years ago, in Lexington Michigan, wild swans made a nest in the harbor. Harbor with pleasure boats and sheriff's boat. Tourists galore. They would have liked to take the parents and nest to a safer spot, but that is illegal. So, citizens patrolled the swan nest area 18 hours a day. They answered questions and kept humans and dogs away from the nest. The eggs hatched, the family survived. The swans never returned to the harbor.

It is possible to protect nesting birds without touching them.

Thanks for sharing. I don't know about wild or migratory birds around here, but sea turtle nests get taped off with caution tape. So, yes, it is possible to protect without interfering.
