One less dog in the neighborhood!

I have to apologize in advance to KHAYWARD as I would assume that what I'm about to post might lock this thread .

I think I am one of the few who actually READS every post on a thread to obtain information and views from other members .

KHAYWARD has stated numerous times that she lives in a RURAL setting . In case some people do not know the definition of this word I will spell it out . RURAL means that you have to drive at least 30 minutes on the highway to reach a gas station or grocery store . Most of these towns DO NOT have ASPCA and if they do it's a little building that takes animals in for a fee ( yes , even if you found them ) And the sherrif is more concerned about theft , drugs , and under age parties vs a dog that has killed your chickens .

The simple fact is......we don't have rescue operations around our parts...the ones that are close have so many that they can't take in the dog , cat , bird , gopher , snake etc you found because they don't have the funding . Not to mention the cost of taking a day off of work to drive it into town because the pound / ASPCA are only open until 4:00pm monday through friday .

KHAYWARD also mentioned that the OWNER of the dog had been informed 5-6 times about this dog and was given PERMISSION to shoot it if attacks happened again . Would it make anyone feel good to shoot a nice dog......NO . Is it a good feeling to know that it was lured off by saying "let's go hunting"...no . It's a price that has to be paid , unfortunately . We all know it's a choice she would rather have not been handed .

Shame on those who would judge her . Is one life worth countless others ? Would those who judge not be infuriated if the same happened to them ?

I do believe people are entitled to their opinions.......but if you give your opinion without proper knowledge...then shame on you . I'd challenge you to live 10 years where we do...rural...raising livestock...and try to go through "your " channels of good and see what happens .

Do not judge lest you've walked in the other persons shoes .

P.S. Most of us blue collar , rural folks do not have the money to save all of gods creatures . We work hard for what we've bought....and can't pay money to "re-home"/spay -nueter all of the strays . We are also not responsible for other owners property . We can not afford to buy new birds after every dog attack .

I dont think a responsible rescue would adopt a "friendly"dog out that is known to have killed other animals before.
" Sure the dog is goo with kids, it only kills chickens out of the blue" ONCE A KILLER ALWAYS A KILLER

Hello...Labs are BIRD dogs! They are bred to hunt birds. I have owned & raised many labs for hunting BIRDS. They wouldn't & never have turned on anyone just because they have killed a bird. Again...That is what they are bred for.

Guess my chocolate lab/spaniel was bred for chickens....he's 7 months now , loves the water , and would LOVE to go after my chickies....but I've TRAINED him not to . So much for instincts .

some of you people are a disgusting group of people. As both a chicken and dog owner i am completely shocked. I have grown up on farms and theses problems all my life. There are others ways to deal with this.Ammonia in a super soaker in the eyes or butt usually discourages them enough. You could have called a dog warden, or called the game warden. You are an evil and nasty and remember what goes around comes around. You should check your self and are not God and should not act like it.Yoy could have acted in a more humane way.

Yeah... here's the thing.. I do expect and will understand the same treatment given to one of my dogs if they ever wander and start hunting other people's pets.... and guess what.. I also know it's my fault for failing to keep them contained.

As for other way, I'd rather spend my time and money looking aftermy own animals instead of other people's.... in here they are dispatched in the quickest, cheapest and most humane way, which is a bullet.

Amonia in the eyes is a disgusting torture and not humane.

at least the dog lives. You people should have class.Celebrate it some more. Remember that children read this stuff. What kind of message are you sending to the next generation. That it is okay to kill that which gives you problems.

celebrate? What kind of a twisted thoughts going through your head when you type that? We take no pleasure in killing other animals, we take pride in keeping our pets safe.

The message we're sending to the next generation is simple..

"BE RESPONSIBLE TOWARDS THOSE YOU HAVE DECIDED TO INVITE TO LIVE IN YOUR HOME"

My children are very clear on the rules and they understand the meaning of death and dieing. Children do not need to be protected from the facts of responsibly raising livestock and protecting their property. Rural children seem to have a better grip on reality and the meaning of being a caretaker to livestock as well as pets.

A dog after any of my livestock - chicken, duck, goose, guinea, turkey, sheep, lamb, goat, kid, pig - whatever I have on my property, contained and minding its own business, not roaming someone else's property or destroying things that do not belong to it or us - will be put down. ASAP. No questions asked.

Children who read in the predator section will have a better understanding of the issues we face with raising chickens as pets or as livestock.

I am not one who blows daisies and red cartoon hearts in the air for any reason. Children do not need to be sheltered from everything you might find distasteful and not to your liking when it comes to responsible animal husbandry.

May your flock aways be safe from the attack of a relentless dog that will kill one after the other. May you never see the horror in the eyes of innocents falling dead from fright and exhaustion becasue they are being chased by that fun loving dog. This is what will come around if a dog owner will not care for their animal.

How many times shall we forgive an animal that kills your livestock and pets.

Shall we just give up owning anything that gives us pleasure becuase of a careless and unthoughful dog owner.

I have seen hundreds of threads on dogs killing chickens. It seems to be a major problem, one that brings pain and suffering for all concerned.

If there were a predator for dogs on the loose and they were unable to defend themselves would you have a problem.

Out here coyotes will take your dog. I sure do not hear many defending these critters when they are shot and killed.

A dog has an owner who can train them or restrain them. Since when is it OK to let your dog roam the neighborhood cuasing havoc and destruction ??

That is why there are LAWS on the books for dog owners.

BTW, a game warden will NOT answer your call for problems with a neighbors dog. They do not have the authority to rectify the problem.

I have given MANY a dog a pass when I find them on the property. They have not harmed any thing. They are passing through. I have also come home to carnage and destruction.

I love my Corgi dog. She is in the mud room every night becuase of the coyotes. She is free to be with the chickens all day long. Why is it that I have never had a problem with my dog ?? I care.
