The hen's only function, then and now, is to lay an egg a day. If she didn't, she became a candidate for Sunday night dinner.
We even put timers on the lights in the hen house to turn them on early so the hens would think it is daylight and begin the laying process further evidence of the hen's stupidity.
I incurred the wrath of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals about 20 years ago when I wrote about my loathing of chickens.
They were upset that I was so harsh about the birds and that I wrote so negatively about them.
But all my friends who grew up in the poultry business understand my loathing of chickens, of having to de-beak them so they don't eat each other, of cleaning eggs morning and night getting them ready for the market, of being pecked on the hands, face and arms by these miniature savages.
And who hasn't, after doing something really stupid, been called a "bird brain"?
Do chickens' rights really belong on the California ballot in November?
I mean, here's a bird with no teeth and no real stomach only a gizzard that uses small stones to help grind up food.
Edited to fix the link.
