Here it is.

... and a good example of cruel stupidity.

Excerpt:

The hen's only function, then and now, is to lay an egg a day. If she didn't, she became a candidate for Sunday night dinner.

We even put timers on the lights in the hen house to turn them on early so the hens would think it is daylight and begin the laying process — further evidence of the hen's stupidity.

I incurred the wrath of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals about 20 years ago when I wrote about my loathing of chickens.

They were upset that I was so harsh about the birds and that I wrote so negatively about them.

But all my friends who grew up in the poultry business understand my loathing of chickens, of having to de-beak them so they don't eat each other, of cleaning eggs morning and night getting them ready for the market, of being pecked on the hands, face and arms by these miniature savages.
And who hasn't, after doing something really stupid, been called a "bird brain"?

Do chickens' rights really belong on the California ballot in November?

I mean, here's a bird with no teeth and no real stomach— only a gizzard that uses small stones to help grind up food.

Edited to fix the link.

Wow, that author is bird-brained if you ask me. What an ignorant individual to assume all chickens are like that. If raised right, not only are they great pets, but good producers too! And we don't have nearly as many ants now as we did before the chickens!

Geez, that guy is a grade-A moron! My favorite comment in response to his column was this one:

When I turn on Lon's light in the middle of the night, he wakes up. What an idiot. It's not morning yet.
I locked Lon in a 2' x 3' cube, which is plenty of space to write insipid newspaper columns. The quality is the same - cantakerous as ever, so I see no need to give him more space. When he stops producing, he'll become Sunday night dinner.
I don't care about your happiness Lon. Just those beings in this world with empathy.

Yes, I loved that comment, Utah!

When I first read that article, I could look at two pages of comments, but now I don't know what happened to the second page. The link seems to have disappeared.

Hello? If someone turn a bright light on in my bedroom early every morning - I'd probably get up too. Gosh , I'm such a bird brain. We should tie this person up, cover him with bugs and let our chickens after him.

at first glance i thought your topic was, "the most IMPORTANT articles i have ever read."

can i just say, i am a dork.

someone else posted this article and i still think this man is either trying to play devil's advocate of is one of those, "i don't care what people think" types.

he has the right to his opinion and that is what it is, there are not any facts helping him out here.

those who raise chickens for food or pets or whatever know he is probably just crotchety!

too bad he doesn't find joy in the little things.
