Ongoing Quilt Projects, Continued from the "No Appreciation...." Thread

Hmm, I use my 1/4" foot to do accurate half square triangles and other Eleanor Burns methods. My machine auto detects what is being sewn and adjusts the pressure. That might be why I don't get pulling.

Made my first quilt for my first granddaughter who will be 19 in April. Didn't invest in a 1/4 inch until about 9 years ago. Love it. Bought my longarm in 2001 as I had a cervical fusion and no way could I manage to do the quilting on a regular machine. Quilted for others for 5 years, have taught some classes and am certified to teach several methods on the longarm. I've also taught a block of the month star block 24 stars. 3 methods strip, paper pieced and hand stitched for a guild. My thread stash may be more varied than my fabric stash. LOL Great Aunt taught me to sew clothes when I was a tot on her treadle. I would sit on her lap because I couldn't reach the treadle. Funny thing was I made a lot of my own clothes but almost flunked HomeEC because I didn't use the teacher's methods. Posting a little trial block for quilt I want to do one day. It's far from perfect but won some local awards. It is studded with crystals. Tis a simple star block partially paper pieced to add an additional oriental fabric. IMG_0612.JPG Mostly I love taking simple traditional blocks and enhancing them with quilting.

Well the girls bumbled (almost dropped my granddaughter) probably from nerves and didn't make the semi finals for cheer. So proud of them making it to nationals, I think the only team ever from their small country town to make it into a national competition. So will be watching the Olympics and working on my current quilt project. Should be cleaning and doing weekend chores. ;)

These at 2 of my wonderful old machines, no computer warnings. I keep the 1/4 inch foot on the 1948 singer the regular foot on the 1930's Anker. The quilt is the type of simple piecing I love to do. It does have an overall quilting design of meandering over the top feathers. If I would have planned it to be on my wall I would have done different quilting. It was for the bed in my spare room that the pups love to jump on. So yes take an interesting focus fabric and add some contrast. It works. IMG_0613.JPG IMG_0614.JPG IMG_0615.JPG

Quilts can be part of life. Most of my quilts have gone to my family to be used and loved. Some like my first quilt have ended up in tatters. It's OK, my GD loved her quilt. She and I made another for her using some of the leftover fabric and others that she chose because her Mom wouldn't let her use the original any more. She at 18 still has it popped on her bed. LOL Quilts can be part of life.

My other GD picked out fabric and a pattern and together we made a quilt for her Mom. I know the quilt shop owner and she still talks about this little girl picking out amazing fabric. She cut most of it with me, sat on my lap and pieced it all except the binding and actually she and her 3 brothers did some of that. She was 3 and actually took over my quilting machine and quilted most of the meandering floral design with her standing on a stool and me behind her. No worries about perfection. LOL It was special, Mom of course loves the quilt.

My grandkids as teens still grab their crib size baby quilts when they are watching tv etc.

I wish mine were treasured by my family as much as that.

My machine has no computerized anything, just a straight stitch mechanical machine that can do 1500 per minute (if I could only go that fast and stay accurate!)

Here is a preview of the new project. The blocks are 18", 9-patch ones, with a few made into stars scattered around the quilt. Looks like spring to me! And some of the fabrics I'm using.

Love Ohio Stars. My inspiration quilt is an Ohio Star hand pieced and quilted by my grandmother and her 3 sisters back in the 1800"s. The quilt and the quilting was designed by their dad, per one of the sisters. She gave me the quilt as my grandmother died when I was 5. I always thought that was interesting that dad was involved. The quilting is amazing small stitches and even though done by children. They were between 7 and 12.

I didn't get any sewing done. finished cutting the larger squares for 1/2 square triangles from the previously cut strips, I need a few more strips. Guess I didn't figure correctly. Have most of the diagonals marked for sewing. It takes so much longer to prep those than it does to sew them together. ;)

I finished the 70 5" nine patches for the new quilt top I am making. I got the rectangles cut out for the half square triangles and will work on those today.
Just found out my MIL is being thrown a 99th birthday party in 2 weeks in another state. (Way to give plenty of notice there  ) Hubby is going, but I have to work. I am going to try to put together a tossed nine patch using charm squares to make her a quilt. Should be fast and easy.

Doing nine-patches here, too, today. Is this really an Ohio Star when the star points are not on rectangles like Flying Geese? They are on squares.

And, the cutting off the corners of the points left me with larger triangle pieces than normal (the yellow squares were 3 1/2" for each corner. The squares are 6" finished, not charm squares, technically, so 18" finished blocks). I could not bring myself to just throw them away so I'm doing this with them. They make 2 3/4" half-squares for some other project.
