Ongoing Quilt Projects, Continued from the "No Appreciation...." Thread

I made one sample block with eggplant and the other colors. Though it is more muted, it also seems old-fashioned, at least to me, which works with the historic prints. If after I surround the center block with these 14" blocks and then border that with gold again, I think it will tie it together. My problem is always that I don't have the perfect fabric for my next step, whatever that is, so I do what quilters have done forever, "make do" and get it as close as I can get to my vision with what I have on hand. If it's a huge faux pas, let me know, but I think it could work. If not, I'll make the other 14" blocks and use them for something else or later in the quilt somewhere and figure a better next step for this Carpenter's Wheel. This is where my quilter's imagination comes in. My husband has none, LOL. He can paint what's in front of him, but he can rarely create something from nothing, unless it's a chicken coop design.

I'm still not too keen on the eggplant, can you switch it to the position the brown is in, or replace it with something less stark? It just seems as though the tone of the quilt goes from antique bronze to brighter bronze. Which is ok, but maybe needs a buffer for the transition?

I wish I was more computer savvy, I would cut and paste your block the rest of the way around the center block so I could see your vision for it easier. You have proven your eye is so much more educated than mine so many times, lol...

The egg plant is not as dark as it appears in the photos. Not sure why it photographed almost black. I'll have to think on it tomorrow. Just watched the double overtime Rose Bowl so I was late answering you, sorry. I'm off to bed soon, will take this up again Tuesday. Maybe I can get another fabric at Walmart or something that will be better than the eggplant color.

What if I bumped up the colors and added one for the lighter one, so the green is the darkest color, not the eggplant. Like this lineup:
I am going to Walmart today and will look for another gold tone fabric, maybe some other browns/reddish-browns to put in the quilt as well. Any excuse to buy fabric, right? I try not to, but usually, I end up buying at least a yard of something to add to what I have, if I admit the truth.

Well, Walmart isn't exactly a quilt shop or even an online vendor as far as selection. And it rarely cycles much at all. I found three fabrics, two in a subdued gold and one in a chocolate brown that I've had before and still have in a burnt orange color that was too orange for this project, or at least, what I wanted from it. I may go to the other Walmart because DH didn't find a backup computer drive he needs at our closest one, which is rather small, so I'll check fabrics there, too, but don't expect a lot of different ones.
I'm not overly fond of the gold print, but it will be in small squares for this block so it won't show all that much. I did not want a super bright yellowy-gold. The solid is a Waverly called Ginger.

Those are looking more in line with the 'tone' of the center for your quilt.

Okay, here are both blocks next to the center block, both the first one with the dark purple/eggplant and the colors I think I'll go with for this round. I could almost alternate them, but not sure how that would look. I have two more almost sewn together so we'll be able to see how they turn the corner.
Sorry it's blurry, very dark in the house now.

I like the lower one better, seems to coordinate nicely. The ginger in particular seems to suit the tone of the center block.
