yay! Glad to hear they made it to you, by the way Yes I did get the EE eggs and they were all fine, none broken. You did a good job packing, they werent over the top. Also, just a tip if you have a question about an egg and whether or not it is just a coloring issue or a crack, use a candler or tiny LED flashlight, like you are candling the egg, if it shows up real prominent and even if you cant feel a crack but it LOOKS like it is dont ship it, shipping one is such a risk, it could break and the egg goo could get on all the other eggs, which could render them unhatchable lol. Anyway, just saw you wrote the ?? on the egg with a crack in it. I candled it and it was quite lucky it didnt break so you really did a great job on the packing.

Today I installed a light in the barn because the one the electrician installed no longer works, and I like to be able to look around in there at night. And I moved a bunch of young chickens from the room in the barn outside to the big chicken tractor. They seem like they are not quite sure what to think. Then I repaired the floor of the portable chicken run and cleaned out the detachable coop somewhat. Still needs work and I want to move it before I put any chickens in it. I did let the buckeyes out for a run since I was right there. I am getting paranoid about predators.
I got a call from a guy who wanted 3 dozen buff orpington eggs. I sell them locally for $6 per dozen unless someone buys a whole lot. Well, he seemed to think I should sell them for $2.50 a dozen "because everyone else does". Oh well, maybe everyone else doesn't build sturdy coops and runs, or feed their chickens well, or collect eggs several times a day.

The cherry tomato plants got put in today. I have my first two red tomatoes out of the garden yesterday ! DH was mowing and wanted to mow the garden because he couldn't tell where the plants were because the weeds are growing so fast. Guess what, that's not how you do it! I did pull weeds for a while and it started to rain again.
Thelma and Louise got themselves back into the proper pasture, but Buttons got into the wrong one. I knew they couldn't all behave themselves. That's goats for you
I have been looking online but have not solved the question of whether a permit is needed for quail in Tennessee . But I will persevere.

Hey H2P, I was searching for 'godzilla' chickens (saw a closed thread about 'big' chickens and knew I'd seen them before). Anyway, on the 'godzilla' thread was a link to a site that had chicken pens, they are pretty neat! I don't know if I'd use flight netting on the tops, but the rest of them look pretty good. Personally I'd rather have something more 'solid' than a bucket for the birds to sleep in, but to each their own I guess. http://www.freewebs.com/cajunyankee/pens.htm

Thought
it might come in handy for your ever-increasing flock, these look pretty easy to make

Your best bet on the quail is to call the local F&G department and ask. I've tried finding info on permits in KY and everything shows hunting permits...not owning

Though I know which 'gamebirds' I'd need one for--bobwhite and grouse

Yeah, I am already there but I make pens that size and bigger. Plus mine have actual coops. I don't expect my chickens to sleep in a bucket. The weather gets too cold here. I do put tarps on top, so they have shade and less rain. Mostly I try to build coops in shade anyway. Sometimes I use goat shelters I have already if the goats don't use them. They refuse to use the shelter in the pasture behind the house. I think they are scared to go there because a tree fell on the one next to it and killed one goat and trapped two others! But I have not converted that one over because it is the only one there and I don't let my goats get wet if I can help it. They hate being wet and can die of pneumonia in a matter of days.
Good idea on the fish and game office, I'll check on it Monday.

I've had one of those days where I just had no energy at all. I had to make myself go out and get busy. I hosed out the sizzle pen. With the rain we've had and the wind blowing it in enough of their pen it was all yucky in there. It's all clean again now. I always hose it out once or twice a week anyway. I have to clean out the duck pond tomorrow. I'd rather they had clean water instead of "pea soup". They don't seem to mind but I do. I know the next pond we make will have a drain. That'll make it alot easier on me to clean it instead of bailing water. What a back breaker that is.

I'm expecting RN pheasant eggs tomorrow and plan to put them under a few broodys. I have some surprise eggs due sometime this month from a monthly swap on FB. I put 2 dozen JB quail eggs in the bator yesterday from my quail. They probably aren't fertile because it's their first full week of laying. Last year when I had different quail it was a good 2 weeks before they started being fertile so I don't expect much from these but who knows. Maybe i'll get lucky.

Yesterday we had a storm blow thru here and when it was over I went to check on everybody I found 4 GG bob white chicks all soaked and nearly dead. I brought them in and put them under a heat lamp and before long 3 of them where back up and acting like nothing had happened but I lost 1. It's amazing how they bounce back after nearly dying. We put up a cover around the hatcher pen so it don't happen again. All we have to do is roll it down at night or when we expect a storm.

ugh, it has soooo been one of those days! I got off work at 6:30 this morning and drove across the street to Kroger when I got back in the car it wouldnt start. Frickin battery is all yucked up and it has internal terminals so no baking soda cleaning can be done.... grr.... well my grandfather made it up there after about 20 calls my 4 year old woke up to the phone ringing and woke him up finally. Thank goodness for that or I would have been STUCk! Got home and fed all the birds, battery will probably have to be replaced, this heat and dry has been hard on everything! Then I had a rough day at work too! Well, I am fixin to go home, hope dinner is ready and maybe I might relax.... hopefully!

Today I got the penthouse coop set up with waterers and feeder, then caught the Polish and put them up there . They have more space , and since they fly pretty well, they are the logical choice since I no longer keep guineas. Now I can clean out that section , and get it ready for the buffs. It was aggravating to try and get the boards attached where I needed them to suspend the waterers, since the blasted hornets kept buzzing around and I was afraid I was going to get stung again. But I did it! It was funny to see the Polish sticking their heads out the window to look at the run. But it was getting dark, so I am sure they will stay in the coop.
Now that I sold all the Leghorns, people are calling wanting the darned things! I had them 6 months! Ugh. I did sell a whole load of day old chicks today and the man wants a lot more. He is raising them to be egg layers, like the organic egg deal. So, I got some money toward the feed bill.:)
It was pretty hot and humid today, so not a whole lot accomplished, but the chickens are fed and watered and tucked in for the night.

well ladies, I candled my eggs from last weeks swaps! I have good news! All the sizzle eggs are GOOD! Only lacking one Silkie egg, still have all the rest under the hen developing good. I also checked the magpie call eggs I ordered from a lady on Ebay, I was worried cause after I ordered them I spoke with an associate of mine from here on BYC and she said she ordered eggs from the same woman before and they all came up infertile. So I was freakin out, fortunately I still have 6 out of ten that are developing great under a broody. Almost all of my eggs are under the broodies right now I have 7 broodies LOL. I am excited about all my eggs, should have some mille cochins next week hatching, they are in the bator, then I will have some pheasant eggs (5) due to hatch then the turkeys in a week and a half I have 4 bourbonred/red palms in the bator I am excited, I dont have any turkeys yet and have yet to have luck with mailed eggs till these, should have the rp eggs from Mike tomorrow! I have to go buy a new car battery most likely and run MORE errands tomorrow (poo I hate running errands!) Then I have a 3 hour extra long shift tomorrow at work.... not getting any farm work done until Thursday but I have my grandpa busy lol, he likes to be busy, he is working around the farm, building 2 more pens, we have several small pens with pheasants in them varying between 1.5 months to 3 weeks or so, they are ready to move into their big bird pens lol.

H2P glad to hear you got the polish settled and got rid of some birds, I am working on getting rid of some of my extra birds now as well.

Yeah, I hate battery issues. The one in my Mule was giving me fits. Sometimes it would kick, sometimes not. So I got a charger. Charge said battery. Works for about a day. I drove around with the charger on board and only turned off the motor if I was near a coop with power. PIA. Finally DH got me a new battery and put it in . Now it makes funny noises sometimes when I try to turn it on. Maybe the cellunoid? Then there's my truck. Got to the chicken auction one time. Turned off motor to unload. Truck will not turn over.ugh! About 6 guys start working on it and determine the cables are loose. Last time this happened they were corroded. Them the other week I locked keys inside=/. It's always something.
